JobDescriptionPerform and evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic clinicalprocedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope ofclinical practice, performing work in accordance with physicianorders in the adult patient population.
Duties andresponsibilities Perform all duties and responsibilities required of aRespiratory Care Practitioner I. Evaluate appropriateness of medical orders. Proficient in the application of mechanical ventilatormodalities. Proficient in the application of Non-Invasive Positive PressureVentilation (NPPV); Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) andBi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) Perform endotracheal intubation and extubations under theobservation of a Supervisor or Advanced Practitioner. Serve as member of the code/emergency team. Administer medical gases. Insert nasogastric and orogastric tubes. Perform tracheotomy tube changes and capnographymonitoring. Transport patients requiring mechanical ventilation or airwayprotection. Interpret clinical data to optimize patient clinicalobjectives. Participate in clinical rounds with physicians, nurses andother health care providers Assist with Bronchoscopy and assist with orientation andtraining of Level II RT. Assure safe operations of devices in the MRI. Qualified for certification in the hyperbaric chamber, ifapplicable to the institution scope of practice
- RequiredQualifications at this LevelEducation
- Completion of a 2 yearrespiratory care program (Associates Degree or the equivalent) orcurrently enrolled in an AMA approved Respiratory Care Program, andregistry eligible.

- Degrees, Licensure,and/or Certification
- North Carolina State Licensure or NorthCarolina State Provisional License,Certification by the NationalAssociation for Respiratory Care (NBRC) if graduate. Certificationin Basic Life Support ( BLS), and any other applicablecertifications applicable to the institution.
- Knowledge, Skills,and Abilities
- Knowledge necessary to make appropriate clinicaldecisions and interactions relative to the specific age of apatient.
Skills validation/certifications of competencies for theduties and responsibilities of this level.
Must maintain annualskill requirementsMust maintain annual safety/compliancerequirementsMust maintain North Carolina annual licenserequirements for CEU’s Customer service and communicationexpertise.
Work involves contact with patients of all ages, familymembers, physicians, nursing, and all other members of the healthcare team.
Work is performed in all areas of Duke HospitalWork mayrequire lifting or pushing in excess of 30 pounds.
Work requireswalking, climbing and bending.
