Job DescriptionPerform diagnostic and therapeutic clinicalprocedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope ofclinical practice. Work performed in accordance with physicianorders and under supervision of a Registered RespiratoryTherapist.
Duties and Responsibilities-Verify physician orders forappropriateness and accuracy
- Understand pharmacologicalindications, dosages and response to adverse drugreactions
- Consults with providers based on patient careassessments and in accordance to accepted protocols. Provideseducation to patients, families, physicians, nursing and othermembers of the health care team
- Monitors response to all therapy.
Documents in the patient medical record. Communicates all pertinentclinical information during patient rounds and handoff
- Performdiagnostic cardiopulmonary procedures; inclusive of nasotrachealand artificial airway suctioning and samples, arterial blood gaspunctures, pulse oximetry and EtCO2 monitoring, pulmonary functionand bedside pulmonary mechanics, and EKG’s
- Recognizes lifethreatening situations and initiates appropriate response, performCPR and bag
- mask ventilation-Assure correct set-up, safety andfunction of all equipment/ supplies necessary in the provision ofpatient care
- Assure adherence to all infectious disease standardsin the delivery of all patient care procedures
- Participates inquality improvement activities
- Maintains all necessary safety andlife support certifications per required

- Required Qualifications atthis LevelEducationActive enrollment in a 2 year approvedrespiratory care program (Associates Degree or the equivalent) andis in good standing.&
- Completion of the first semester of therespiratory care program.
ExperienceNone required beyond clinicalaffiliation of the respiratory program.
Degrees, Licensure, and/orCertificationThe student RCP must register with the Board beforeproviding Respiratory Care procedures as a Respiratory CareAssistant and will receive an approval letter from the Board. Thestudent RCP will provide a copy of the approval letter to theemployer.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and any othercertifications applicable to the institution.
Knowledge, Skills, andAbilitiesKnowledge necessary to make appropriate clinical decisionsand interactions relative to the specific age of a patient.
Skillsvalidation/certifications of competencies for the duties andresponsibilities of this level.
Must maintain annual skillrequirements.
Must maintain annual safety/compliancerequirements.
Must maintain North Carolina annual licenserequirements for CEU’sCustomer service and communicationexpertise.
Work involves contact with patients of all ages, familymembers, physicians, nursing, and all other members of the healthcare team.
Work is performed in all areas of Duke University HealthSystem, at applicable hiring location.
Work may require lifting orpushing in excess of 30 pounds.
