Summary:

The Surgical Technology Apprenticeship Program Coordinator is a clinical resource person for the Surgical Technology students and is responsible for their assignments and clinical evaluations. This position is responsible for facilitating student assessment and program evaluation of the Surgical Technology apprenticeship and fellowship program to determine effectiveness of instruction (including, but not limited to, nursing perioperative course). Travel between MHS acute care facilities required. Flexible work schedule based on training needs.

Responsibilities:

Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates the didactic and clinical course curriculum for the Surgical Technology Apprenticeship Program in collaboration with the Program Director, Surgical Services Leaders, and Surgical Services Educators.

Presents program updates to Program Director, Surgical Services Leadership, Directors of Education, and stakeholders.

Conducts needs assessment/program evaluation at completion of each cohort to further refine curriculum.

Assesses student progress weekly; meets with student, educator, and nurse manager to provide timely feedback on performance and opportunities for improvement.

Facilitates and monitors student clinical experiences in the perioperative settings (live and simulation).When volumes are high, the Manager may also perform as a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room.

Provides feedback to the Program Director regarding department/hospital policies or changes in practice in the field and makes suggestions for program modifications or improvement.

Ensures that assigned course programs adhere to established schedules, specifications, regulations, and objectives.

Collaborates with Surgical Services Educators for student preceptor and case assignments.

Complexity of Work:

Good interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills in relating to students, clinical personnel, and physicians. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Required Work Experience:

Designated by the healthcare system and possesses a minimum of three (3) years’ current experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) in the Operating Room who has proficient scrubbing skills, and a sound knowledge base of the procedural techniques applied in surgery.

Other Information:

Prior experience in an educational or instructional capacity preferred. Must have current BLS and CST.
