Overview:

Assists the Mohs surgeon by providing and controllingsurgical instruments and equipment during Mohs stages. Ensures thatinstruments and supplies are cleaned, sterilized and available asneeded. Provides hands on assisting with Mohs procedures. Assistswith lab/pathology processing of Mohs specimens. In addition, thesurgical assistant will assist the dermatologist providers inday-to-day dermatology patient flow.

Responsibilities:

Opens sterilesupplies and sets up for each procedure.

Performs medical assistingduties which may include, but are not limited to, vital signs,height and weight, and assisting during excisions and Mohs surgicalprocedures. Ensures that all patient care areas are clean,organized, stocked and ready for patient use.

Assists Mohs surgeonduring procedure according to prescribed standards. Assists andanticipates the needs of the surgeon.

Performs proper dosing andmixing of medications: Buffered Lidocaine, Kenalog, Sclerotherapypreparations, Botox- Cosmetic & Hyperhidrosis, etc.

Sets upprocedure room, according to prescribed standards.

Assists Mohssurgeon throughout the procedure with instruments, and providinghands on assistance, according to prescribed standards.

Takesappropriate photographs of Mohs stages. Label and organizephotographs.

Performs appropriate point of care testing, such as labtests and specimen collection. Implements quality control standardsto ensure proper functioning and accuracy of testing equipment.

Provides patients with relevant instructions for specific tests andprocedures.

Sterilize and package instruments.

Sterilization andaseptic technique:

Demonstrated expertise in safety principles,asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions.

Knowledge ofand ability to disinfect, clean and sterile surgical instruments,equipment and supplies.

Assist in procedure room maintenance,including case preparation, room turnover, and instrumentprocessing.

Communicates with patients, other teammates and thegeneral public in a courteous, helpful manner by phone and inperson.

Document in the electronic medical system (EMR) asneeded.

Assist with inventory and storage of equipment andsupplies.

Performs medical assistant duties as required for non-Mohspatients, as part of the dermatology practice as needed.

Provideddemonstrated competency and supervisory agreement is in place,performs injections of subcutaneous and intramuscularmedications.

Assist with OSHA daily and monthly checks. Must havethe ability to correctly maintain the OSHA log.

Complete sutureinventory and check rooms for expiring inventory.

Records andmaintains pathology logbook to ensure that all pathology reportshave been properly documented.

Responsible for cross coverage whenneeded.

Must be willing and able to travel to brand or regionpractice locations to provide clinical coverage when needed. Thisincludes providing coverage when clinicians are on vacation as wellas sick calls and PTO coverage.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.

CertifiedDermatology Technician (CDT), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) orRegistered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent amount ofeducation and experience required.

Two years of experience in anoutpatient surgery center, Mohs dermatology practice, oroffice-based surgery department preferred.

BLS certificationrequired.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities:

Infectious control, HIPAA,and OSHA knowledge is preferred.

Strong interpersonal and customerservice skills required to communicate with patients, familymembers, physicians, and other health care providers, as well asother colleagues in a positive, professional manner.

Possesses anddisplays knowledge of medical terminology.

Must possess strongproblem-solving abilities and analytical skills to ensure patientsneeds are met.

Must possess excellent computer skills to input andretrieve clinical information.

Utilize critical thinking and goodjudgment in performance of tasks.

Must possess organizational skillsand can multitask.
