Description:
The Surgical Technologist Certified functions underthe direction of the registered professional nurse. Assists thehealth care team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturallyaware patient care. Has knowledge, skills, and abilities to performduties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgicalcases. Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills forprogressively more difficult cases. Demonstrates an efficient,organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes initiative todiscuss the surgical plan with other members of the healthcareteam. Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment. Anticipatesany additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Hasthe ability to mentor, precept, or train in various modalities.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Dutiesinclude, but are not limited to, preparation of the operative suiteand surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment.
Maintains the sterile field and other patient safety concernsthroughout procedures. Gathers required instruments and suppliesand serves as a surgical assistant as needed. Other duties asassigned may include assisting with inventory, ordering, andstocking. Ensures compliance with all standards at all times. Callor late coverage may be required related to the facility. Checkssupplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Assists withroom set-up to include opening sterile supplies. Sets up a steriletable with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication neededfor procedures accurately and timely. Performs appropriate surgicalcounts with the circulator. Actively participates in the procedurepause/time-out. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; gowns and gloves thesurgeon and assistants. Assists in draping the sterile field.
Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure. Maintainsan organized back table and operative field. Anticipates and offerssurgeons suggestions throughout the procedure for facilitatingcases. Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique duringprocedures. Prepares sterile dressings. Actively participates inpost-procedure pause, ensuring proper handling of specimens. Cleansand prepares instruments for terminal sterilization, notifyingrelated staff of critical needs. Applies principles of asepsis toensure the prevention of infection and safety. Prepares case cartsaccording to procedures and preference cards. Observes thepatient’s condition and immediately reports any changes to thephysician and registered nurse. Proactively plans for the nextsteps in the procedure as needed. Prepares OR rooms and other areasfor receiving patients, including stocking and cleaning equipment.
Maintains financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment.
Provides relationship-based patient-centered care consistent withpopulation-specific characteristics. Partners with the patient byverifying procedures and conducting bedside shift reports.
Practices using current clinical standards under the supervision ofthe registered nurse. Upholds all organizational policies,procedures, and clinical competencies. Supports evidence-basedpractice and ethical accountability. Demonstrates teamwork andcollaboration in providing patient care. Promotes team spirit and apositive work environment. Serves as a patient advocate, ensuringsafety and comfort measures. Assists colleagues with cleaning andpreparing rooms for the next patient. Participates in performanceimprovement initiatives and seeks opportunities to improveprocesses. Maintains a positive attitude and flexibility inassignments. Completes all required competencies and educationrelevant to the position. Provides a positive learning environmentfor students and new hires. Maintains knowledge of new technologyor procedures introduced. Ensures organization and cleanliness ofthe surgical area. Completes all additional duties as assigned.
