Assists the health care team in providing safe, age appropriate andculturally aware patient care. He/she has advanced knowledge, skilland ability to perform duties within the context of at least twosurgical specialties including moderate to high acuity cases (withan expectation on occasion to work above this level as casesrequire) as defined by the scope of anatomy, equipment andinstrumentation of the case and anticipates the needs of thesurgeon and other members of the healthcare team. Must havethe clinical skill, knowledge, and disposition to mentor, preceptor train in various modalities. Initiates performance improvementinitiatives in conjunction with unit leadership. Duties include,but are not limited to, preparation of the operative suite andsurgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment whilebeing vigilant for the maintenance of the sterile field and otherpatient safety concerns. Competency TestingCoreResponsibilities and Essential Functions:
He/she has the knowledge,skill and ability of the procedure being performed and anticipatesthe needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare teamwithin moderate to high difficulty surgical cases as defined by thescope of anatomy, equipment, and instrumentation of the case
- Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure whichincludes review and utilization of appropriate preference card.
- Assists with room set-up to include opening of sterile supplies.
- Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, andmedication/solutions needed for procedure in an accurate,aseptically prioritized, and timely manner, including reviewing andutilizing appropriate preference cards.
- Performs appropriatesurgical counts with circulator.
- Actively participates in theprocedure pause/time-out.
- Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; Gowns andgloves surgeon and assistants.
- Assists in draping sterile field.
- Passes instruments to surgeon during the procedure. Maintains anorganized back table and operative field. Able to anticipate andoffer surgeon suggestions throughout the procedure for facilitatingcases.
- Maintains highest standard of sterile technique duringprocedure.
- Prepares sterile dressings.
- Actively participates inpost procedure pause which includes accounting for proper handlingof the specimens.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminalsterilization, taking initiative to inform SPD of critical needinstrument.
- Applies principles of asepsis to ensure the preventionof infection and safety of patients and employees.
- Prepares casecarts according to procedure and preference cards. Reviews surgicalschedule and assists clinical coordinator with preparation forfuture cases.
- Observes patients condition and immediately reportsany changes or significant findings to the physician and RegisteredNurse.
- Proactively plans for the next steps in the progression ofprocedure as needed, demonstrating an ability to adjust withoutfaltering when an emergency arises.
- Performs with the knowledge,skill, and ability within the context of moderate to high acuitysurgical cases.
- Prepares OR room and other areas (as needed) forreceiving patients, which includes stocking, cleaning equipment orstorage areas, turns OR room over, orders/requests supplies,preparing instruments for future procedures, notification ofspecialty staff regarding needed instrumentation or equipment.
- Maintains a financial stewardship related to supplies andequipment, only opening required supplies until requested by thesurgeon.
- Applies knowledge of advanced surgical techniques.
- Exhibits a high level of collaboration with peers in decisionsmaking related to surgical patient care.
