Description:
The Surgical Tech works underthe supervision of the surgeon and registered nurse. Assists thesurgical team during operative procedures by arranging andinventorying sterile set-up of instruments, equipment, and suppliesfor surgical cases. Passes items to surgeons and nurses as needed.
Assists in preparing and moving patients and in sterilizing andcleaning instruments, equipment, and rooms. Uses preference cardsto identify supplies and equipment needed for scheduled surgical oremergency procedures. Updates preference cards with any necessarychanges. Sets up sterile tables with instruments, supplies,equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedures.
Prepares solutions and medications used, properly labeling andreporting amounts for charting. Prepares back tables and mayostands, anticipating the needs of the surgeon through the use ofthe surgeon’s preference card. Provides supplies or equipment uponrequest for the surgeon, nurses, and/or anesthesiologist. Assistswith draping sterile fields, covering operating and instrumenttables. Performs appropriate counts with the circulator prior tooperations, before incisions are closed, and as needed. Deliverssurgical specimens/cultures from the operative field to thecirculating nurse. Maintains the highest standard of steriletechnique during procedures. Checks package integrity, indicators,and opening procedures. Prepares and sterilizes supplies andequipment used in surgical procedures. Reviews and replacessupplies in the surgical case following each procedure. Discardsexpired medications per protocol. Assists with the terminalcleaning of the operating room. Puts equipment, supplies, andinstruments away as required. Assists in prepping the room for thenext patient. Holds retractors or instruments, sponges, orsuctioning the operative site. Applies electrocautery to clamps onbleeders, cuts suture material, connects drains to suctionapparatus, and applies dressings to wounds. Ability to provideon-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours per departmentpolicy. Effectively communicates with the surgical team.
Anticipates possible problems or complications that may ariseduring cases. Adjusts quickly and prepares for emergent cases thatchange the workflow. Performs all duties in a conscientious,courteous, and caring manner to maintain positive customerrelations. Maintains efficiency under stress and with irregularworking hours. Adheres to department procedures and acceptableprotocols. Applies knowledge of the dress code related to StandardPrecautions and consistently wears appropriate personal protectiveequipment. Reports any life safety issues, environmental concerns,or process deviations to the immediate supervisor. Participates inquality improvement, evidence-based practice, and researchactivities. Engages in professional development through in-servicesand meetings. Shares expertise to enhance the quality of patientcare and staff development. Seeks learning opportunities for growthand advancement. Assists with the education of new staff andstudents. Demonstrates effective time management and proactivelyprioritizes workload.
