- Occ SummarySurgical Technologists (ST) areallied health professionals who assist in the preparation and careof surgical patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics under thegeneral direction of a professional nurse.
The ST possessesexpertise in the theory and application of sterile aseptictechnique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgicalprocedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitatea surgeon’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnosticprocedures. The ST who has a dual function in the operating roomand the ambulatory setting demonstrates competency in the care ofsurgical patients preoperatively and postoperatively in theambulatory surgical clinic setting.
- Work PerformedLevel INewgraduate with up to 18 months of full-time equivalent experience.
Perform all responsibilities in a manner that demonstrates ServiceExcellence towards patients, physicians, peers and otherdepartments. Assume responsibility for upholding the policies andprocedures of the department and organization. Demonstrates eagerness to learn, takes direction, adapts to changes within unit,demonstrates consistent progress toward Level II. Establishes andmaintains sterile field and assures team maintains sterileenvironment. Demonstrate and practice a good understanding ofsterile technique. Has a basic knowledge of instrumentations.
Prepare Operating Room with appropriate instrumentation, equipmentand supplies. Demonstrates correct and safe instrumentation passingand performs sponge, needle and instrument counts in a safe andaccurate manner. Maintain technical skills to serve a patientpopulation comprised of infancy to geriatric clients. Take callsand rotate shifts as required under the direction of a registerednurse. For Surgical Technologists with a dual role in an ambulatoryenvironment, additional responsibilities may include: preparepatients for examinations and procedures in the surgical clinicsetting; assist the physician during patient examination andprocedures in the clinic; collect and label laboratory specimensfor processing; reinforce postoperative instructions underdirection of physician or RN; assist with incoming and outgoingpatient calls under supervision of physician or RN; removesutures/staples, change sterile and non-sterile dressings,following DUHS policies and procedures, under direction of RN orphysician; perform other clinical functions as delegated andsupervised by the RN or physician; schedule and post surgicalcases; coordinate complex scheduling of cases which requireadditional surgical support; update and file patient medicalrecords. Must advance to level II within 18 months. Perform otherduties and responsibilities as required.
- Level II Perform all theduties and responsibilities of Level I, plus the following: Assistwith the teaching of newly hired technologists and studenttechnologists.
Serve as a role model to new employees and otherstaff members. Establish and maintain sterile field and assure teammaintains sterile environment independently. Anticipate the needsof the surgical team. Apply basic knowledge of instrumentations toseveral cases. Demonstrate appropriate and correct casepreparation. Competent at unit level. Corrects deficiencies at thecase level. Communicate effectively with patients, staff membersand physicians. Adherence to standards including but not limited tounit and hospital policies and procedures, regulatory standards,and patient safety goals. Assume responsibility for self andensures that the policies, procedures and safety practices of theOperating Room and Hospital are reinforced. Perform other dutiesand responsibilities as required.

Ability to workeffectively and efficiently under pressure in a stressfulenvironment, and often without relief. Ability to demonstrateknowledge of anatomy relating to the surgical procedure and theinstrumentation required in order to effectively anticipate theneeds of the surgeon. Ability to set priorities and respondappropriately to actual and/or potential life threateningsituations.

- Minimum Qualifications-EducationGraduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program ormaintains an accredited Surgical Technologist certification (NCCTor NBSTSA). Or, provides evidence of the successful completion ofan appropriate training program for Surgical Technology in theUnited States Military.
