  • General Descriptionof this Role Surgical Technologists (ST) are allied health professionals whoassist in the preparation and care of surgical patients rangingfrom infancy to geriatrics under the general direction of aprofessional nurse.

The ST possesses expertise in the theory andapplication of sterile aseptic technique and combines the knowledgeof human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools andtechnologies to facilitate a surgeon’s performance of invasivetherapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The ST who has a dualfunction in the operating room and the ambulatory settingdemonstrates competency in the care of surgical patientspreoperatively and postoperatively in the ambulatory surgicalclinic setting.

Perform all responsibilities in a manner thatdemonstrates Service Excellence towards patients, physicians, peersand other departments. Assume responsibility for upholding thepolicies and procedures of the department and organization.

Demonstrates eager ness to learn, takes direction, adapts tochanges within unit, demonstrates consistent progress toward LevelII. Establishes and maintains sterile field and assures teammaintains sterile environment. Demonstrate and practice a goodunderstanding of sterile technique. Has a basic knowledge ofinstrumentations. Prepare Operating Room with appropriateinstrumentation, equipment and supplies. Demonstrates correct andsafe instrumentation passing and performs sponge, needle andinstrument counts in a safe and accurate manner. Maintain technicalskills to serve a patient population comprised of infancy togeriatric clients. Take calls and rotate shifts as required underthe direction of a registered nurse. For Surgical Technologistswith a dual role in an ambulatory environment, additionalresponsibilities may include: prepare patients for examinations andprocedures in the surgical clinic setting; assist the physicianduring patient examination and procedures in the clinic; collectand label laboratory specimens for processing; reinforcepostoperative instructions under direction of physician or RN;assist with incoming and outgoing patient calls under supervisionof physician or RN; remove sutures/staples, change sterile andnon-sterile dressings, following DUHS policies and procedures,under direction of RN or physician; perform other clinicalfunctions as delegated and supervised by the RN or physician;schedule and post surgical cases; coordinate complex scheduling ofcases which require additional surgical support; update and filepatient medical records. Must advance to level II within 18 months.

  • Perform all the duties and responsibilities of Level I, plus thefollowing: Assist with the teaching of newly hired technologistsand student technologists.

Serve as a role model to new employeesand other staff members. Establish and maintain sterile field andassure team maintains sterile environment independently. Anticipatethe needs of the surgical team. Apply basic knowledge ofinstrumentations to several cases. Demonstrate appropriate andcorrect case preparation. Competent at unit level. Correctsdeficiencies at the case level. Communicate effectively withpatients, staff members and physicians. Adherence to standardsincluding but not limited to unit and hospital policies andprocedures, regulatory standards, and patient safety goals. Assumeresponsibility for self and ensures that the policies, proceduresand safety practices of the Operating Room and Hospital arereinforced. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to adapt to changes within unit.

Ability to workeffectively and efficiently under pressure in a stressfulenvironment, and often without relief. Ability to demonstrateknowledge of anatomy relating to the surgical procedure and theinstrumentation required in order to effectively anticipate theneeds of the surgeon. Ability to set priorities and respondappropriately to actual and/or potential life threateningsituations.

  • Minimum Qualifications-EducationGraduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program ormaintains an accredited Surgical Technologist certification (NCCTor NBSTSA). Or, provides evidence of the successful completion ofan appropriate training program for Surgical Technology in theUnited States Military.
