SUMMARY:
As an OR Surgical Tech, you are crucial in the efficiency andoverall success of operations. You will assist the surgical team byacting as the primary scrub tech who handles the instruments,supplies and equipment during surgical procedures, ensuringsterilization at every point of the process.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Must maintain at least 15 hours of Continuing Medical Education(CME) per year.
- Checks supplies, instrumentation, and equipmentneeded for surgical procedures and ensures proper operation.
- Provide a sterile field for surgical procedures. Ensures that themembers of the surgical team are properly attired and assists thesurgeon with draping the patient to isolate the operative site.
- Assists in the maintenance of the sterile field by applyingprinciples of aseptic techniques and informing the surgeon/surgicalteam of infractions.
- Passes instruments and supplies to thesurgeon.
- Counts sponges and sharps with the RN prior to thesurgery and before the incision is closed.
- Prepares the steriledressing for the patient’s incision.
- Stocks rooms, may handlemeds, sharps and syringes on the OR field
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Completed a military surgical technology program
- OR•CertifiedSurgical Technologist certification through National Board ofSurgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTS) and degree inSurgical Technology required•OR•Grand-Fathering Clause•Provideevidence he or she was employed as a surgical technologist in ahealthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurringbetween 12/31/10•12/31/14.
- OR•Hard to Fill Clause•A healthcare facility may employ or otherwise contract with a person whodoes not meet the requirements of the function of a surgicaltechnologist if they are unable to employ or contract a sufficientnumber of qualified surgical technologists.
- Certified SurgicalTechnologist certification through National Board of SurgicalTechnology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required within 24months after employment and degree from accredited programrequired.
- Surgical Technologist Certification is not required forLicensed Practical Nurses (LPN) with current licensure in the Stateof New York
