Description:
Under the direction of the nurse manageror Registered Professional Nurse, the Scrub Technician handles theinstruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgicalprocedures. The technician has an understanding of the procedurebeing performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeons. Thescrub technician has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensurequality patient care during operative procedures and is constantlyvigilant in maintaining sterile technique.

Understands and adheres to the client Performance Standards,Policies, and Behaviors. Essential functions and responsibilitiesare as per New York Public Health Law 2824 – Surgical technologyand surgical technologists. Performs nursing procedures per clientpolicy. Checks supplies and equipment prior to surgical procedures.
Scrubs, sets up, counts, and assists intra-operatively. Maintainsthe highest standard of sterile technique. Assists the surgeon andRN with post-procedure care. Handles specimens appropriately.
Prepares instruments for decontamination. Assists with preparingand picking OR cases. Follows client policies and procedures forInfection Control and Fire Code. Identifies malfunctioningequipment appropriately. Follows patient safety standards. Respondsappropriately in emergency situations. Completes competencyrequirements. Attends all mandatory in-services. Utilizes costcontainment practices. Completes fifteen hours of ContinuingEducation Credits as required by New York State Law, effectiveJanuary first, two thousand fifteen. Performs all other relatedduties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
HighSchool Diploma or GED required and must meet one of the following:
Graduate from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program and holds andmaintains CST certification, having successfully completed anationally accredited educational program for surgicaltechnologists and holding and maintaining a Certified SurgicalTechnologist credential administered by a nationally accreditedsurgical technologist credentialing organization; or completed amilitary surgical technology program; or is grandfathered byproviding evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in ahealthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurringwithin the four years immediately prior to the effective date ofthis section. Any employer of persons performing surgicaltechnology on the effective date of this section shall confirm inwriting to each employee his or her employment in a capacityperforming surgical technology in a healthcare facility as of theeffective date of this section. This also applies to those in theservice of the federal government, to the extent the person isperforming duties related to that service.
Prior experience as aSurgical Technologist is preferred. Certification by a nationallyaccredited surgical technologist credentialing organization isrequired. A grace period for recent graduates allows a person to beemployed or contracted to practice surgical technology during thetwelve-month period immediately following the successful completionof a nationally accredited surgical technology program, but theymay not continue to be employed or contracted beyond that periodwithout documentation that the employee or contractor holds andmaintains a certified surgical technologist credential.
As of Aprilfirst, two thousand seventeen, BLS certification through theAmerican Heart Association is required. Those hired before Aprilfirst, two thousand seventeen must receive the BLS certification byApril thirtieth, two thousand eighteen. Those hired on or afterApril first, two thousand seventeen must receive it within sixmonths of hire.
