JOB SUMMARY

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible forthe independent operation of sonography equipment, and forperforming and communicating results of diagnostic examinationsusing sonography. The Sonographer is responsible for dailyoperations of the sonography area, basic equipment maintenance,reporting equipment failures, and quality assessments (QA). Thesonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at alltimes and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding andknowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as theyevolve.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONSPerforms clinical assessment and diagnosticsonography examinations, e.g., vascular, breast, kidney, abdominal,BPP, etc. Performs diagnostic OB/GYN sonography as prescribed bythe provider. Submits diagnostic ultrasound exam to physician forinterpretation.

Uses cognitive sonography skills to identify andrecord appropriate anatomical, pathological and diagnosticinformation and images.

Assumes responsibility for the safety,mental and physical comfort of the patient during theprocedure.

Maintains a safe workplace environment and ensuresadequate supplies.

Checks to ensure that equipment operates at anacceptable performance level. Contacts manufacturer for equipmentrepairs and maintenance check.

Ensures high level of customerservice.

Uses cognitive sonography skills to identify, record, andadapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological,diagnostic information and images.

Uses independent judgment duringthe sonography exam to accurately differentiate between normal andpathologic findings.

Analyses sonograms, synthesizes sonographyinformation and medical history, and communicates findings to theappropriate provider.

Assumes responsibility for the safety, mentaland physical comfort of patients while they are in thesonographer’s care.

Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area andmaintains adequate supplies.

Prepares preliminary reports andcontacts referring provider when required, according to establishedprocedures.

Coordinates with other staff to assure appropriatepatient care is provided.

Organizes daily work schedule and performsrelated clerical duties as required.

Reports equipmentfailures.

Provides in-service education team on requirements ofsonography procedures as requested by other members of the healthcare team.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

ANDEXPERIENCEGraduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical SonographyProgram or Cardiovascular Technology ProgramBachelor of Sciencedegree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography is highly desirable.3 yearsexperience in OBGYN examinations preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ANDABILITIESAbility to effectively operate sonographyequipment.

Ability to evaluate sonograms in order to acquireappropriate diagnostic information.

Ability to integrate diagnosticsonograms, laboratory results, patient history and medical records,and adapt sonography examination as necessary.

Ability tocommunicate effectively with the patient and the health care team,recognizing the special nature of sonography examinations andpatient’s needs.

Ability to establish and maintain effective workingrelationships with the public and professional colleagues.

Abilityto follow established organizational procedures / protocols.

Abilityto work efficiently and cope with emergency situations.

ADDITIONALQUALIFICATIONS

Active certification by American Registry forDiagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) preferred.

RELATIONSHIPREPORTINGReports to Site Clinical Manager

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OFJOB

Strength sufficient to lift patients, move heavy equipment onwheels (up to approximately 500 lbs.), and to move patients inwheelchairs and stretchers.
