JOB SUMMARY
An ultrasound sonographer is a diagnostic ultrasound professional that provides diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. An ultrasound sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography. The sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease and new procedures as they evolve.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION
Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathological findings
Analyses:
sonograms, synthesize information, medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental, physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer’ care Maintains a daily log of patients seen if applicable Performs other work-related duties as assigned Coordinates with other staff to assure appropriate patient care is provided Addresses problems of patient care as they arise and makes decision to appropriately resolve the problems Assumes responsibility for the safety and well-being of all patients in the sonographic department Care for the equipment to ensure longevity of the machine and transducers; report equipment failure to the supervisor / manager Position patients on examining tables and provide adequate protection based on already existing safety standards Perform calibration and adjustment of ultrasound devices in an appropriate manner Keep record of images captured during ultrasound process Communicate effectively with patients during ultrasound processes Recognize and record appropriate anatomy and physiology using sonographic equipment Write reports based upon completion of the ultrasound scan, documents thoroughly in EMR system Alert the appropriate physician and/or clinical staff of abnormalities that require immediate attention Present images and preliminary findings to physicians and the clinical nurses Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (e.g., HIPPA) and facility policies, and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Solid technical skills for operating the equipment and getting usable images, the physical skills of good hand-eye coordination to move equipment on the patient’s body in correspondence to what appears on the screen, stamina to stand for long periods of time and the ability to lift and move patients as needed. Important people skills include having compassion and the ability to help patients who might be in extreme pain or mental stress to relax.
