Job Summary:

Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Shorter, Alabama is seeking a compassionate and skilled Associate Veterinarian to provide high-quality medical care to animals in our shelter. Responsibilities include performing intake exams, spay/neuter surgeries, rabies vaccinations, occasional emergency care, as well as collaborating with medical and shelter staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct thorough physical examinations, diagnose illnesses, and develop treatment plans for shelter animals. Perform spay/neuter surgeries, dental procedures, enucleations, amputations, mass removals, other surgical procedures and necessary medical interventions. Administer rabies vaccinations, prescribe parasite control, antibiotics and other preventive and wellness care. Provide emergency medical treatment for injured or critically ill animals as needed. Oversee euthanasia decisions and perform humane euthanasia when necessary. Maintain accurate medical records using shelter management software. Assist in disease control and outbreak management in partnership with the shelter leadership and team of veterinarians. Ensure compliance with Association of Shelter Medicine Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters, national best practices for shelter medicine protocols and evolving industry standards.

Qualifications & Skills:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) degree from an accredited institution. Active Alabama state veterinary license (or ability to obtain one). Compassion for animals and commitment to shelter welfare standards. Ability to work in a fast-paced, emotionally demanding environment. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends or holidays if needed. Experience with infectious disease management in shelter settings is preferred but not required. Familiarity with HQHVSN techniques or willingness to learn.
