Veterinarian Technician Gulf Coast Humane Society 2010 Arcadia Street, Fort Myers, FL 33916

Position Summary:

The Veterinary Technician plays a vital role in the daily medical care and well-being of animals in the shelter. This position supports the shelter veterinarian in the evaluation, treatment and is responsible for ensuring humane, efficient, and high-quality veterinary care. The ideal candidate is compassionate, detail-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced, team-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist with the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of shelter animals under the supervision of the shelter veterinarian. Administer medications, vaccines, fluids, and treatments as prescribed. Collect and process laboratory samples (fecal, blood, urine, skin scrapings, etc.) and perform basic diagnostics. Maintain accurate medical records in shelter software system. Monitor the health of animals in the shelter, reporting changes or concerns promptly to the veterinarian. Educate and communicate with staff, volunteers, and potential adopters about animal health, treatment plans, and preventative care. Ensure cleanliness and proper sanitation of medical areas, equipment, and kennels. Follow and enforce safety protocols for handling animals, especially those with medical or behavioral concerns.

Qualifications:

2 years prior experience working in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or animal welfare as a Veterinary Technician. Ability to safely handle animals of various sizes, temperaments, and health conditions. Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to prioritize in a dynamic environment. Compassion for animals and a commitment to shelter medicine and animal welfare. Comfortable with computer-based medical recordkeeping. Ability to work weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and carry animals and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand, bend, or kneel for extended periods. Must be comfortable working around all types of animals and potential allergens.
