Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include, but are notlimited to: Managing Medical Cases (60%):
- Ensure CARE provideshigh quality individualized care, considering the medical andbehavioral needs of our patients while maintaining overallpopulation medicine using shelter best practices to a wide range ofcruelty, neglect, and at-risk patients.
- Serve on a panel withmedical, behavior, and operations leaders to review cases and makeweekly pathway planning decisions, including humane euthanasiadecisions, taking into consideration animals’ physical andbehavioral well-being, using organizationally aligned toolsdeveloped to assess quality of life and readiness for adoption.
- Perform humane euthanasia for animals deemed unsuitable forplacement, working closely with the behavior and medical teams toensure a compassionate, low-stress procedure.
- Perform medicalintakes on all new NYPD and CE cases admitted to CARE and incollaboration with partner departments for animals admitted toveterinary partner hospitals, AAH, ARC, and Adoption Center asneeded.
- Provide medical support for large scale NYPD and CEcases.
- Perform exams, diagnostic tests, and medical treatmentswith full utilization of Fear Free medical handling. Ensure allstaff are practicing Fear Free handing.
- Develop skilled andefficient diagnosis and treatment plans following ARC/CARE/AAHmedical parameters and guidelines.
- Provide medical care foroutpatients of owned, fostered out and/or animals in transition tothe Adoption Center and placement partners.
- Maintain thorough,high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, testresults, and treatments.
- Work with partner hospitals as needed,including referral for advanced care, and assessing medicalstability of new cases at partner hospitals.
- Respond toafter-hours medical concerns.
- Oversee and maintain the CAREanimal census. People Management/Managing Patient Flow (20%):
- Oversee the daily medical care and case flow of the animals housedin CARE.
- Lead the Daily CARE rounds meeting.
- Lead monthly CARELVT meeting.
- Develop, disseminate, and keep current the CAREStandard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensure theirimplementation. Facility-specific SOPs are developed in conjunctionwith ARC, AAH, Adoption Center, BST to ensure best medical,sheltering, and behavioral practices.
- Model a standard ofcontinued commitment to improve and expand upon all aspects of CAREincluding, medical, behavior, housing, safety, and animal flow.
- Set expectations and goals and provide consistent, high-qualityfeedback to direct reports, including regular 1:1s and quarterlyfeedback sessions to build strong relationships, provide cleardirection, and encourage opportunities for development. Completeannual performance evaluations.
- Practice and espouse positive,people-centric management approaches that are in line with team andorganizational core values.
- Recommend internal and externaltraining opportunities as needed for direct reports in identifiedareas.
- Respond to concerns from direct reports and selectedadministrative staff, addressing them promptly and accordingly.
- Handle employee-relations issues with confidentiality and care,ensuring compliance with any applicable collective-bargainingagreements.
- Conduct corrective actions related to performance.
- Maintain proactive communication with the Senior Director as to anycritical situations or issues.
- Support the Senior Director ofVeterinary Services in handling any adverse client or patientevents appropriately and professionally.
- Model a standard ofcontinual commitment to improvement in all aspects of CARE animalcare and handling of dogs and cats.
- Serve as a champion in timesof change management and proactively partner with the ARC and CARELeadership team in identifying ways to improve people policies andmedical protocols.
- Collaborate with the AAH Office Manager andDirect of Veterinary Services to ensure CARE has appropriate DVMcoverage 7 days per week.
- In collaboration with the AAHmanagement team, ensure the CARE veterinary team is scheduled forall required training, meetings, and lectures. InterdepartmentalCommunication/Administrative/Other (20%)
- Collaborate and supportthe work of partner departments, particularly the Humane LawEnforcement, Community Engagement, and the Adoption Centerdepartments.
- Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing withcriminal cases.
- Attend staff meetings, doctor meetings and otherrequested meetings.
- Provide medical information and representCARE to the public and to media when requested.
- Provide a highlevel of customer service to external and internal clients.
- Create, model, and follow written and verbally communicated ASPCAand CARE Standard Operating Procedures.
- Assist with specialprojects, presentations and data collection as requested.
