Retail Operations Manager Position Objective:

Supports the Museum’s mission by providing excellent customer service to enhance the customers’ retail and coffee bar experience while maintaining strong operational protocol to protect the Museum’s assets. The Museum of Life and Science, one of North Carolina’s top family destinations, has been a beloved Durham institution for 75 years. The Museum features 84 acres of exhibits, experiences, and outdoor exploration, including one of the East Coast’s largest butterfly conservatories and a two-story science center. As an accredited zoo, the Museum is home to lemurs, black bears, endangered red wolves, and more than 140 species of live animals, butterflies, and insects. Readers of Durham Magazine, Indy Week, and Carolina Parent have repeatedly named us the top Museum in the Triangle. Qualifications Required:

A demonstrated passion for customer service Superior drink building skills Excellent conflict prevention and resolution skills A demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently and in an organized fashion Ability to monitor, organize, and rotate coffee bar inventory and place orders accordingly Excellent delegation and follow-up Ability to develop and train others General business comprehension Basic knowledge of computer systems Ability to accurately handle cash, charge, check, and gift card transactions as well as deposits Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies with provided training Ability to stand for up to 9 hours Ability to withstand prolonged periods of repetitive motions with hands/wrists Ability to maneuver around coffee bar, sales floor, and stock room including repetitive bending, prolonged standing, twisting, and climbing Ability to lift 40 pounds Flexible schedule with weekend and potential evening work

Desired:

Coffee bar/retail supervisory experience 1+ year of barista experience Servsafe certification Visual merchandising experience Conversant in Spanish Familiarity with Counterpoint Responsibilities Open and close the coffee bar and Museum stores in accordance with department standards. Serve as primary coffee bar staff member. Maintain Servsafe certification and ensure adherence to standards. Execute drink recipes accurately and ensure staff members do the same. Motivate team through positive reinforcement of service standards. Monitor traffic flow and adjust staffing to maintain appropriate levels during peak periods. Maintain visual merchandising standards with great attention to detail. Monitor inventory levels and collaborate with Retail Operation Manager in placing orders for coffee bar supplies. Effectively communicate operational successes, opportunities, and concerns to the Retail Operations Manager. Know and ensure that Museum and health department policies and procedures are always followed. Model responsible behaviors to team. Using the Museum’s values as a guide, foster positive culture on the team, motivating through positive reinforcement. Prioritize and handle multiple tasks, delegating when appropriate. Develop and train others. Work independently with limited coaching and oversight. Always demonstrate adherence to Museum safety procedures. Engage with Museum visitors in a positive and helpful way to support an enjoyable and safe guest experience. Prioritize the Museum’s values of inclusion and kindness in all interactions with staff, volunteers, and guests. Additional duties as assigned
