Position Summary:

The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about preparing healthy and tasty meals. They should have a solid understanding of flavor profiles, menu development, all while exceling at customer service. Those who have a lot of experience cooking in a restaurant, catering, performing food demonstrations, and have the ability to communicate/educate others about their healthy cooking prowess will enjoy this role. This position requires a strong understanding of meal production with an ability to prepare full meals with and/or without the use of recipes. A good understanding of large batch cooking is a must. The ability to be creative, knowledge of a variety of cuisines, and the aptitude for creating meals with little to no direction are traits that are highly desired in an ideal candidate. While standardized recipes are typically used, we welcome individuals who enjoy and are passionate about cooking healthy, delicious meals that can serve a diverse group of tastebuds. As the Community Chef, you will motivate, encourage, and educate Fortune Society participants and members of our surrounding communities about health food choices, how to prepare new and/or unfamiliar fruits and vegetables, and discuss the importance of incorporating nutritious foods into one’s diet. You must possess and demonstrate charisma, a zeal for cooking and food, and a knowledge of nutrition.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Craft diverse and culturally rich menus that resonate with the tastes and preferences of our diverse community. Cook delicious meals in accordance with menus, recipes and nutrition standards set by New York City, Director and food safety regulations Maintain cleanliness of kitchen space and kitchen equipment Serve (when needed) to residents and/or clients in a respectful manner Uphold food quality standards by helping to ensure continuity of recipe execution between locations Work with Cook Supervisor and team to complete inventory, procurement and requisite paperwork and administrative duties as needed i.e., temperature logs, etc. Communicates food, supply and equipment needs in a timely fashion Knowledge of culinary terms and techniques especially those that make healthful foods delicious Reliable, punctual, and dependable—a team player that understands the culture of a kitchen Contributes to an organized, clean and sanitary working environment as dictated by departmental and governmental regulations. Works in other Fortune Fresh program areas as needed Exemplifies the organization’s mission and code of conduct.

Qualifications:

Diverse experience in cooking and food preparation from large batch cooking to catering NYC Food Protection certification required Servsafe certification preferred, but not required 8-10 years of professional cooking experience Experience or training in nutrition and culinary arts Ability to make good nutrition part of cooking process Creativity and awareness of food trends/tailoring food to appropriate audiences desirable Dynamic personality and excellent presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills Ability to work in multi-cultural settings with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations Possesses an interest in making a difference with respect to nutrition, while having a passion for food accessibility and healthy food choices Knowledge of NYC Food Standards is preferred, but not required Bilingual, Spanish-speaking strongly desired.

Travel Requirements :

Travel to other Fortune Society kitchen locations may be required depending on business needs.

Physical Demands:

Ability to lift boxes of food and beverages as needed, up to 50 lbs. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
