Emma’s Torch is a non-profit social enterprise that empowers refugees, asylees, and survivors of human trafficking through culinary education. Based in Brooklyn, we operate a workforce development training program through our social ventures. More information can be found at EmmasTorch.org.

THE POSITION

The Sous Chef will work alongside their Sous Chef counterpart and Kitchen Operations Manager to support restaurant operations, provide a safe and constructive work environment for the students, and manage the day-to-day back of house & service operations. The Sous Chef position at Emma’s Torch is a unique opportunity to work in a restaurant that allows you to be actively involved in all aspects of the operation, as well as practice and develop your teaching and leadership skills as you work with our unique student base. This position works weekends, helping to support our brunch and/or catering events.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Ops 50%
Collaborate with Sous chefs for cooking, cleaning, service, and prep as needed
Maintain working knowledge of restaurant dishes and operations, to effectively replicate and teach to students
Assist with scheduling, menu development, costing, inventory, labor control, and DOH guidelines
Manage family meal and creation of specials with an understanding of product utilization and organization
Respond to guest inquiries as needed, for questions about program, ingredients, allergens, etc.
Teaching & Mentorship 50%
Mentor and support students throughout their experience at Emma’s Torch restaurant in Carroll Gardens Be an example for work ethic, conduct, training, organization, sanitation, professionalism, and how to cook in a professional environment

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:

Culinary Arts degree or equivalent training; 1-3 years progressive experience in the Back of House, including butchery, events & catering, and all meal periods.
Food Handler’s License Skills and Approach to

Work:

Committed interest in teaching, mentoring, and the advancement of culinary arts in the restaurant industry
Outstanding communication, supervisory, and problem-solving skills
Self-motivated with an excellent work ethic
Full commitment to excellence in operations
Proficient in English (additional languages a plus)
Knowledge in the Google Suite / Microsoft Office
While performing the duties of the job, the Sous Chef will be regularly required to stand and walk as well as occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Able to work full-time
Advanced knowledge of product, families of ingredients, and allergens
Math (at a level proficient enough to teach)
Conflict resolution skills
Ability to handle situations with an awareness of and sensitivity to trauma

Full-time $65,000/year salary
