Summary:
Cedar International is seeking an experienced, passionate, and creative Head Chef to lead our kitchen team at Charleston Regional Center Cafeteria Services. The Head Chef will be responsible for overseeing all kitchen operations, including menu development, food preparation, staff management, and ensuring the highest quality of food service and safety standards.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan, create, and update menus reflecting creativity, seasonality, and customer preferences. Manage daily kitchen operations, including food prep, cooking, plating, and presentation. Supervise, train, and schedule kitchen staff; foster a positive and productive team environment. Maintain high standards of food quality, consistency, and hygiene. Manage inventory, food costs, and ordering to ensure profitability and minimize waste. Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and company policies. Collaborate with management to plan special menus, events, and promotions. Handle administrative duties such as scheduling, payroll, and vendor relationships as needed. Lead by example in all areas, setting the tone for professionalism, punctuality, and kitchen culture.
Skills and Qualifcation Requirements:
Associate’s degree in culinary arts or formal training (but not always required based on experience). Proven experience as a Head Chef, Executive Chef, or similar leadership role. Strong leadership and communication skills. Deep knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards. Creative flair for menu design and plating. Ability to work under pressure and adapt in a fast-paced environment. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Strong budgeting and inventory management skills.
Physical Requirements:
Standing for long periods (up to 8-10 hours a day) Lifting and carrying heavy items (up to 50 pounds — things like bulk ingredients, equipment, or full trays) Bending, reaching, and stooping frequently Ability to work in an indoor cafeteria setting. Repetitive motion; Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
