$22 – $25/hour (based on experience & skillsets), plus time and a half for hours over 40 hours/week and designated holidays.

Hours:

Average of 30 hours per week (some weeks 20 hours, others up to 45 hours); must be available evenings and weekends, including Sundays Position Summary The Part-Time Church Sexton plays a vital role in the life of the church by providing a welcoming, clean, and well-maintained environment for worship, fellowship, and community events. This position requires flexibility, reliability, and strong communication skills to support a busy church campus that hosts both church-related and external events. The Sexton will frequently work independently, including opening and closing the building, and must be comfortable interacting with the public. Key Responsibilities 1. Sunday Hospitality Prepare and set up the Fellowship Hall for post-worship hospitality Brew and serve coffee, arrange refreshments Ensure is properly stocked from stockroom Clean and tidy up the Fellowship Hall afterward Wash dishes and tidy kitchen Notify Church Administrator of needed supplies 2. Building Access and Security Open and close the church facility as needed (closing more often) Ensure all rooms are properly cleaned and secured at the end of each shift Be the primary contact during events, present and available to assist with logistics; respond to the needs of the group(s) as they use the space 3. Facilities and Custodial Duties Clean and restock restrooms during shifts Monitor and report facility needs or maintenance issues to the Church Administrator Perform basic custodial tasks to ensure cleanliness and safety throughout the facility Perform basic maintenance tasks as directed by the Church Administrator 4. Event and Rental Support Set up and break down rooms for meetings, classes, concerts, receptions, and other events per detailed setup instructions Coordinate with renters and group leaders on-site to ensure proper access to rooms and equipment Answer basic questions from renters about facility use (e.g., thermostat, light switches, restrooms, trash disposal) Ensure church policies and procedures are followed by all groups using the building Provide friendly and helpful on-site presence during evening and weekend rentals or special events Report any issues, damages, or concerns related to rentals or events to the Church Administrator promptly 5. Communication and Coordination Communicate clearly with the Church Administrator, full-time Sexton, staff, volunteers, and outside groups Relay updates regarding events, building use, and maintenance needs to the Church Administrator Collaborate with others to ensure smooth transitions between multiple events and shift hand offs. 6. Team Support Fill in for the full-time Sexton during their scheduled time off, as needed Work cooperatively with all church staff and volunteers to maintain a hospitable environment Other responsibilities as defined by the Church Administrator Qualifications Experience in hospitality, facilities, or custodial work preferred Comfortable working independently and managing time effectively Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to interact professionally with the public Dependable, punctual, and able to adapt to a flexible schedule Able to lift up to 30 pounds and perform physical tasks related to event setup and cleaning Familiarity with churches or community centers a plus Must be a team player committed to the church’s mission of hospitality and service Comfortable using electronic communications systems (including electronic calendars, emails, texting, etc.) Working Conditions This position involves evening and weekend hours, including mandatory Sundays The schedule varies based on the church’s calendar of events, with slower months being June-August (Sometimes January-February), and very busy months being March-May, and September-December. Work is entirely on-site at the church facility
