Job Description Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts invites qualified candidates to apply for the part-time position of Head Usher. We strive to create the safest and most enjoyable experience for our guests and the Head Usher plays a critical role in achieving this goal. Ushers are one of the first staff members guests see and interact with upon their arrival and are one of the last our guests see and interact with as they leave. Head Ushers help orchestrate this experience, overseeing the Front of House part-time staff. The Head Usher must be able and willing to stand in one place to interact with guests and traverse the venue for several hours at a time, sometimes for the duration of an event. They must be able to speak confidently and professionally with our guests, clients, and fellow employees. They must be able to operate an electronic ticket scanner, 2-way radios, as needed, and in the case of emergencies, a cellular phone. The Head Usher must be able to work well with others and must be able to report to work on-time, appropriately dressed and ready to work when scheduled. Duties and Responsibilities Provide clear and concise instruction & assignments to general usher staff based on event needs and logistics
Oversee & directly manage general usher staff including but not limited to conflict management and informing Front of House Managers of any conduct and performance concerns amongst staff
Minimal office responsibilities including scanning staff time sheets, completing appropriate incident reports, and validating tickets via electronic tablet equipment
Greet and welcome all guests they encounter
Hold doors as guests enter the facility
Scan guest tickets as they enter the facility and/or theatre
Help guests locate their correct theatre entrance
Show guests to their specific seats
Assists guests with accessibility needs
Help guests locate the nearest restroom, water fountain, ATM, elevator, box office, fire extinguishers, etc.
Be able to answer any show related questions, such as: How long is the performance? Is there an intermission? Are drinks permitted inside the theatre?
Enforce rules/policies set by the client and/or House Manager, which are subject to change per event and during an event. Examples of such policies are as follows: keeping the aisles clear, camera/video policy, guest cell phone use, food/beverage policy, etc.
Manage the process of loading/unloading of program kiosks
Manage the process stuffing/un-stuffing of inserts into programs
Be vigilant at all times to ensure guest safety
Provide optimal assistance to patrons in an emergency or evacuation
Attend pre-event meetings for assignment and receive event specific instruction
Comfortability with problem-solving and conflict resolution
Operate in flexible settings within various changes such as schedules, event management and execution
Maintain great leadership qualities; especially under fast-paced event execution Typical Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent is required
Prior experience in guest relations/customer service preferred, but not required
Must be able to provide their own uniform which consists of black pants (no jeans), black shoes (no boots/sandals. Black sneakers can be worn if they are entirely black with no visible markings), white button-up shirt
Must have, be able to use and/or have access to a working email account
Must be able to pass a controlled substance test and have favorable background and reference checks

Additional Information Expectations:

Must be able to learn the layouts/sections of our three (3) main theatres: A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater, Meymandi Concert Hall, and Raleigh Memorial Auditorium
Must be able to read event tickets (visual acuity corrected to read as small as 11-font print) in dim lighting with use of a flashlight
Must be able to lift 25 lbs., move up venue stairs and ramps and sit and stand as needed
Must be able to follow directions
Must be friendly, enjoyable to be around, and must be able to approach and engage with guests
Must be able to resolve guest and client concerns/complaints as they arise
Must be able to work in a leadership role cohesively among usher staff and other departmental staff (security, concessions, maintenance, housekeeping, etc.)

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Working Conditions
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
