Overview:

The Assistant Nurse Manager provides effective leadership support by the delegation, coordination and integration of services within their assigned department to assure the provision of quality nursing care. This position reports to the Nurse Manager/Director or Administrator and provides supervision as well as support to the nursing staff, including direct patient care as needed. The Assistant Nurse Manager provides administrative support to the department and assists clinical leadership with identifying and meeting productivity and staffing needs.

Responsibilities:

In coordination with leadership, responsible for coordinating and directing patient care. Applies both clinical and operational management skills to meet the established quality, patient satisfaction, financial, and operational goals of the department. Assigns, coordinates and assists in the delivery of patient care ensuring compliance with physician orders and established policies and procedures. Consistently strives to understand, anticipate, and meet the needs, expectations and satisfaction levels of patients and visitors. Seeks feedback from patients, visitors, and staff to help improve performance. Participates in data collection for use in improvement of patient care as assigned. Identifies and assists in the development of long and short term projects to meet patient, staff, unit or organizational needs as assigned. Orchestrates patient flow. Assists in scheduling staff based on patient acuity and staffing patterns. Monitors productivity of staff, use of time and delegates nursing personnel according to their capabilities to meet patient needs. Monitors safety in administration of prescribed medication. Monitors clinical documentation in the medical records to ensure completeness and accuracy and compliance with hospital and program standards. Monitors the nursing process utilization, ensuring timely completion of the nursing assessment and care plans as well as appropriateness of content. Develops and maintains communication with physicians and the multi-disciplinary care team regarding patient’s status and needs. Participates in multi-disciplinary teams meetings, representing the Nursing perspective on patient conditions/progress. Huddles daily with care team to disseminate information. Collaborates with department leadership in the hiring and termination of staff, progressive discipline and staff evaluations. Ensures a safe, secure, clean environment for patients, staff and visitors. Assists department leadership with infection control monitoring and evaluation for the department. Functions as a clinical resource to staff. Observes and coaches staff in performance of clinical duties and interpersonal interactions. Evaluates educational needs of staff. Assists in developing and providing formal and informal learning experiences for staff. Participates in the orientation and/or on-the-job training of personnel. Supports leadership in ensuring compliance with Joint Commission, federal, state, and other applicable regulatory requirements. Implements program philosophy, objectives, standards of care and procedures on consultation with leadership. Provides direct patient care consistent with the Registered Nurse job description. Monitors supplies/equipment, ordering/repairing as required to ensure the quality of care and operational standards are maintained. All other duties as assigned by department.
