If you are considering employment as an independent bookseller, there are some things that might influence your decision. Working around books all day, while wondrous for many, can also be strenuous and tiring. Most of the day is spent on one’s feet and there can be lifting and carrying of all kinds of things.
Job responsibilities include:
Writing author requests and proposals to publishers that are listed in our industry event grids Reaching out to authors/publicists/venue owners to propose events not in the grids Answering emails from publicists and authors; deciding which events to say yes to, and which to politely decline Conveying and managing expectations and scheduling for authors (and their publicists) Coordinating events, including working with authors and publicists, as well as staff hosts (when other than yourself) on all details of the event: Working with our buyer to order books Attending and hosting events Reporting internally on the event the next day and maintaining sales and attendance figures to pass on to publishers Coordinating logistics of out-of-store events, including securing venues Working with social media coordinator to promote events Maintaining event listings on our website Being a bookseller on our robust off-site event schedule, including: book fairs, farmer’s markets, author events, literary festivals, and other exciting opportunities that present themselves Spending one/two shifts per week on the floor as a bookseller Duties, responsibilities and activities may change or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.
The right candidate would be:
Comfortable working in partnership with co-workers and/or solo A licensed driver, able to drive our company van to offsite events, and perform local deliveries Able to set up in store and offsite events with assistance or single handedly as required Able to self-start & finish sales floor projects Capable of enjoying talking with people & engaging the general public Able to adapt to unforeseen obstacles Innovative & solution-driven Comfortable enough with technology to troubleshoot problems while at offsite events Available to work a schedule that flexes with the seasons including some weekends& holidays Able to lift lots of 45lb boxes of books Proficient at recommending books and other merchandise to both in store customers and at offsite events
Experience and Ability:
1 year of experience in the book industry required at a bookstore and/or publisher A broad awareness of current publishing, including comfort and knowledge of different genres Excellent communications skills, both writing and speaking Outstanding organizational abilities, an orientation to detail (there are lots of moving parts here), and a commitment to following through The ability to thrive in a sometimes chaotic environment where things don’t always go 100% to plan A love of reading is desired and a mastery of the English alphabet is a must. Previous retail experience is a plus, but we will train the right person. Working as a dedicated community partner and creating a destination of discovery for our customers, the store expanded into the storefront next door in summer 2020.
