Opened in 2016, Buxton Books is an independent, New York Times and ABA reporting bookstore located on King Street, the main thoroughfare in historic, downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Buxton Books is an events-motivated bookstore, with a track record of successful, book-included events. We specialize in dynamic, creative events ranging from bespoke walking tours to culinary events. With a knowledgeable staff, highly curated book selection, and robust event schedule, we value and uphold the traditions of a neighborhood bookstore while also welcoming the visiting reading community. Buxton Books specializes in creative collaborations throughout our community with venues, non-profits, and many other organizations.
Job Purpose:
The Events Coordinator at Buxton Books will plan, coordinate, and execute a variety of event logistics related to book launches and author readings, including in-store events, offsite events, and community partner events. This role will involve managing all aspects of event logistics, building strong relationships with key stakeholders, and providing support and direction to assigned staff preparing for and participating in events. The ideal candidate will possess excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, strong project management abilities, and a passion for literature and the publishing industry. Primary Responsibilities Serve as the main point of contact for all event logistics from start to finish—including planning, execution, and post-event wrap-up Coordinate with a wide range of stakeholders, including authors, publicists, vendors, and internal team members, maintaining clear, timely, and professional communication throughout the entire process Manage and maintain the custom Events Packet for each event, ensuring all details are captured thoroughly, updated as needed, and shared within appropriate timelines Attend and lead many events on-site, ensuring smooth execution and a positive experience for all involved; when not present, ensure the designated point person is fully briefed, equipped, and empowered to carry out all responsibilities with confidence and clarity Continuously evaluate event operations and guest experience, identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing thoughtful solutions Build and nurture strong working relationships with authors, publishing partners, vendors, and the Buxton team, contributing to a collaborative and trusted reputation Communicate changes, needs, or updates clearly and effectively across all relevant parties, especially in time-sensitive or high-pressure situations Serve as a key representative of Buxton Books at all events, embodying our values of hospitality, curiosity, and care in every interaction Uphold brand standards and attention to detail across all aspects of the event, from setup and signage to customer flow and team readiness
Who You Are:
Bachelors Degree in Hospitality Management, Event Planning, or related field preferred – equivalent professional experience will also be considered Proven experience working in high volume (3-5 events per week) events-based organization You have the ability to work outside the standard 9-5 hours, including weekends You have strong time management and organizational skills You are flexible and understand that company needs will change at any given time You are friendly, approachable, and love engaging with strangers You have excellent communication skills You care about the impact you have on other members of your team You love learning & take initiative to do so Be able to lift 50 lbs Be able to stand on your feet for prolonged periods of time
