Cafe is a space for specialty coffee, tea, natural wine, and hi-fi listening in the Village of Catskill. With an intense focus on providing drinks and food of the highest quality and integrity, 27 Cafe’s aim is to be a home for drinks, food and music presented with passion and intention. The cafe attempts to remedy some of the most common problems in the food service industry by being fully transparent to guests regarding sourcing, costs and pricing. Staff are all paid equally at a rate that allows the cafe to eliminate tipping. Ongoing training and education about coffee sourcing, roasting and brewing, wines and teas will be provided and paid. 27 Cafe is open daily from 8:00AM to 8:00PM, with extended weekend hours during scheduled music programming.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Cafe Staff role is broad and multi-faceted. Cafe Staff are responsible first and foremost for taking guest orders, preparing coffee, tea, wine and other beverages, maintaining the cleanliness and smooth operation of the Cafe, and providing high quality customer service. All Cafe Staff members are expected to share the same core responsibilities; however, as the role develops, Staff are encouraged to gravitate toward their specific skills and passions within the overall job description with Manager approval. Cafe Staff members are responsible for opening and closing the Cafe in adherence with existing procedures, participating in initial and ongoing training and education, and executing the menu to a consistent and high standard. This role pays $25/hour to start, with negotiated raises at 6 month intervals. Full-time or part-time candidates are both encouraged to apply, with a 20-hour per week minimum commitment preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES
For opening shifts, Staff member is to follow outlined opening procedure, including but not limited to setting up guest seating areas, getting all equipment operational, checking in with Manager about menu updates, and working with Manager to dial in menu items for the day. Staff member is expected to have a deep understanding of menu items, including sourcing, processing, preparation and presentation. It is expected that notes are taken when new menu items are discussed and training is underwent. Maintain a clean and organized workspace, wash, sanitize and dry dishes as they are returned, and reset guest areas throughout the day. Keep disposables, retail products, bathroom products and counter items fully stocked.
Prepare coffee and tea beverages to the highest possible quality, ensuring that no corners are cut when dialing in, brewing, tasting and carrying out pre-established recipes.
Communicate the menu and its potential complexities and nuances to guests in a way that feels enthusiastic, inclusive and approachable. Foster a culture of inclusion and shared curiosity with all guests.
Take orders from guests into the POS accurately, communicate incoming orders effectively to fellow Cafe Staff members.
Maintain an awareness, understanding, and active interest in the music playing throughout the day; check in regularly to see what is playing, communicate current and upcoming programming to guests.
Work with Manager to execute the food menu throughout the day; learn the pickups for savory dishes, and on occasion assist with the morning pastry bake.
Use discretion when serving alcohol at all times; including sales to those under 21 as well as guests that are overserved. Communicate both with Manager.
For closing shifts, Staff member is to follow outlined closing procedure, including but not limited to a full break down of food and beverage stations, cleaning all surfaces and floors, assisting with resetting the register.
Attend paid trainings as they are scheduled and maintain a practice of note-taking and daily learning.
COMPENSATION
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
