Job Summary:
The Director of Environmental Services is responsible for managing the housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance functions to ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment for residents, staff, and visitors. This role plays a critical part in promoting resident well-being and satisfaction while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards specific to long-term and assisted living care.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee day-to-day operations of housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance departments. Ensure all resident rooms, common areas, and facility grounds are cleaned and maintained to high standards. Supervise and schedule environmental services staff, providing training, guidance, and performance evaluations. Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including infection control and safety standards (e.g., OSHA, CDC, state health departments). Coordinate preventive maintenance schedules and manage work orders for repairs and facility upgrades. Develop and manage departmental budgets, including purchasing of supplies and vendor contracts. Implement and monitor safety and emergency preparedness procedures, including disaster plans and fire safety. Collaborate with nursing and administrative staff to address resident needs and service requests. Maintain accurate documentation related to inspections, compliance audits, equipment maintenance, and staff training. Lead sustainability and waste reduction initiatives where possible.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (required); associate or bachelor’s degree in facility management, business, or healthcare administration (preferred). 5+ years of experience in environmental services, including 2+ years in a supervisory role; experience in assisted living or long-term care strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of infection control protocols, cleaning standards, and maintenance practices relevant to senior care environments. Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to interact respectfully and compassionately with older adults. Proficient in Microsoft Office and facility management systems.
Preferred Certifications:
Certified Director of Environmental Services (CDES) – from the Association for the Healthcare Environment (AHE) preferred. OSHA 10 or 30-Hour Certification preferred. CPR and First Aid Certification (as applicable).
