Custodian (Civic Center Campus) Walker County Government LaFayette, GA 30728 Job Summary The Facilities Custodian is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of county buildings and surrounding properties. This includes disinfecting high-touch surfaces, removing debris, maintaining floors and carpets, emptying trash receptacles, and other custodial duties. This position may also be responsible for opening and closing facilities for events and responding to various maintenance needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Custodial & Cleaning Tasks:
Sweep, mop, dust, and disinfect building interiors, including bathrooms and common areas Dust furniture and scrub surfaces clean Clean and service restrooms; restock supplies as needed Maintain floors by vacuuming, shampooing carpets, and buffing/waxing as directed Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors using appropriate tools and cleaning agents Disinfect high-touch surfaces (e.g., door handles, fixtures) Fog buildings with disinfectants when required Empty trash receptacles, clean and replace liners as needed
Facility Maintenance & Support:
Move and arrange furniture or equipment, including event setups such as dance floors Unlock and/or lock facilities for events occurring during or after business hours Monitor building security and safety (e.g., locking doors, checking electrical appliances) Identify and report maintenance needs or safety concerns
Exterior and Grounds Maintenance:
Use pressure washers to clean building exteriors and walkways Drive motorized utility vehicles for cleaning and maintenance Keep playground areas clean and free of debris Perform snow and ice removal on walkways and parking areas (as needed) Maintain litter control across the campus
Other Responsibilities:
Maintain the overall cosmetic appearance of buildings and the property Perform other duties as assigned by management, possibly without prior notice Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED required Must be at least 18 years old Must successfully pass a criminal background check and periodic/random drug screenings Skills and Abilities Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to follow safety procedures and operational policies Strong attention to detail and cleanliness standards Professional and courteous communication skills Dependability and ability to adapt to varied tasks Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance required Must maintain a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) Physical Demands These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Custodian’s job. Hearing and speech is necessary to communicate with customers and co-workers by telephone and in person. Good vision is required for all functions. This position must be able to lift 35 pounds frequently Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is usually exposed to a noise level that is moderate to loud. Work is performed in a variety of buildings, requiring travel between cleaning assignments by foot or car. Most of the tasks are performed indoors with heating and air conditioning and the rest of the work is performed outdoors and in seasonally extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, as well as rain and other environmental elements, and weather conditions normal to this region. Physical hazards include travel, dangerous equipment, noise and vibration, exposure to fumes, gasses, chemicals, dust, and dirt. The employee should wear comfortable and durable clothing. The employee will be expected to wear proper protective equipment such as, but not limited to, foot support and protection, protective eyewear, and gloves.
