The Maintenance Custodian at Friendly Academy plays a critical role in creating a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and families. Reporting to the Director of Culture and the CEO, this team member is responsible for daily cleaning, light maintenance, and upkeep of the building and grounds. JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the immediate direction of the Director of Culture, the Maintenance Custodian is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the building and grounds, using the appropriate materials, methods, policies and procedures. Essential Job Functions Arrive promptly to open and/or close the school building daily Profiencent attendance to perform assigned duties Maintain proper storage of hazardous chemicals Maintain a safe work area Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment Assist where appropriate with the installation of building fixtures. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Culture in collaboration with the Leadership Team. Custodian Duties and Responsibilities Clean and mop floors as needed, empty trash cans throughout the facility, promptly clean all floor spills and/or wet spots created by inclement weather, maintain entryways and hallways free of dirt and debris. Clean and sanitize all toilets, urinals, and sinks. Clean the cafeteria and assist with lunch duty cleanliness. Wash building walls and windows. Replenish restroom paper and soap dispensers as needed. Perform perimeter checks to maintain a clean outside environment, clear of rubbish and debris. Clean and dispose of any identified outside trash and debris. Ensure snow or debris removal from sidewalks in front of the building and the surrounding area, and utilize ice melt agent to ensure sidewalk safety. Notify the Director of Culture and the Leadership Team of the need for building repairs. Attend training to remain informed of OSHA regulations as it pertains to assigned duties; changing techniques in cleaning and maintenance. Clean and sanitize all surfaces in common/shared areas with disinfectant cleaner. Ensure fire exits and escapes are clear and ready for emergency use. Maintenance Duties and Responsibilities Replacing light bulbs and batteries in wall-mounted devices (e.g., clocks, smoke detectors). Tightening loose screws or handles on doors, furniture, or fixtures. Unclogging minor sink or toilet blockages using a plunger or basic tools. Hanging bulletin boards, posters, or other light fixtures as requested. Assisting with setting up or breaking down furniture for events and school functions. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent At least 2 years of custodial experience, preferably in a school or similar facility Basic proficiency with Google Workspace (e.g., email, calendar, forms) for communication and task tracking Clear verbal and written communication skills to report maintenance needs and follow written instructions Friendly, dependable, and professional demeanor with a commitment to providing excellent service to students, staff, and families Knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures, material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) requirements, appropriate use of cleaning chemicals and equipment, OSHA Regulations as it pertains to assigned duties
WORKING CONDITIONS
Inside/outside environment; all types of weather, snow, rain, wind, heat, and cold; frequently noisy, dirty, and dusty; vibration from equipment or tools; sometimes includes close quarters.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Walking, standing, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to monitor various activities; read documents, kneeling, bending at the waist, sitting and standing, walking or sitting for extended periods; reaching overhead, above shoulders, and horizontally, or bending at the waist; lifting heavy objects of thirty pounds are common. Requires manual dexterity, repetitive motions, hand/eye coordination, strength, and endurance; occasional work at heights, use of heavy electric and manual equipment; requires alertness to potential hazards common in maintenance.
