QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience in housekeeping work. Ability to read and write. Ability to supervise and work effectively with other people as well as understand and follow oral and written instructions. General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment. General knowledge of school heating system operation and maintenance. Must possess physical strength sufficient to perform heavy manual tasks. Must obtain and maintain a CDL Bus license and drive a bus when called upon to do so.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs supervisory and heavy manual work in the minor repair of school buildings and the firing and maintenance of school HVAC systems. Serves as lead worker over a group of employees engaged in the cleaning of the school buildings and facilities. Responsible for firing, cleaning, and care of the HVAC system. Performs work under the supervision of the school principal or other supervisor and is reviewed through personal inspection to assure completion of assignments in accordance with instructions and established standards. Head custodians are working supervisors and are responsible for conducting on-the-job in- service training for custodial staff. Possesses responsibility for the satisfactory performance of duties required of custodial staff under his/her jurisdiction. Performs work in stripping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, and spray buffing floors in school buildings; arranges and move furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed including from one area to another. Tends to and cares for school HVAC systems. Cleans and makes minor repairs and adjustments to HVAC systems. Washes windows, woodwork, walls, and ceilings. Cleans restrooms, fixtures; replenishes tissue, towel and soap containers; replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; empties waste receptacles into large containers and removes containers from building. Performs minor repairs such as replacing damaged switch plates and faucet washers, unstopping drains and commodes, gluing loose baseboards, replacing damaged ceiling tiles, etc. Constantly keeps the building clean of any scattered paper and other litter that may detract from the appearance and sanitation of the building. Performs grass cutting; edging of walkways, buildings, fencing, access ways; cares for shrubbery on school campus. Performs other related work as required such as cleaning sidewalks and grounds. Attends seminars and workshops as scheduled by the Custodial Supervisor pertaining to increasing job efficiency and skills. Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties. Obtains and maintains CDL bus license. Completes the pre-trip and post-trip inspection. Drives a bus when called upon to do so while maintaining proficiency in driving skills. Maintains bus route schedule. Maintains discipline and reports undisciplined students to school administration. Discharge students only at authorized stops and transport only authorized students. Complies with local and state traffic regulations and observes all mandatory safety regulations. Reports delays and accidents. Cleans the interior of the bus. Serves as team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer driven, and valuing fairness. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

: Must be able to perform medium/heavy lifting exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or to 25 pounds of force constantly to move object. Must be able to climb ladder and be capable of traveling through needed crawlspace area.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Applicant must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) when requested for purposes of driving a school bus. REV 04/25
