The South Carolina State Museum is a premier cultural institution dedicated to showcasing the rich history, natural history, art, and science of South Carolina. This is an exciting moment for the South Carolina State Museum as it embarks on its Reimagine the Experience campaign to revolutionize the museum experience for our visitors and expand our impact state-wide. This collaborative campaign will allow the museum to share more of its extensive collection of over 1.1 million objects and specimens and renew over 150,000 square feet with updated permanent exhibitions and immersive multimedia experiences which highlight fascinating stories and people throughout South Carolina’s history. The SC State Museum is seeking a Janitorial Coordinator responsible for cleaning, scheduling and assigning cleaning tasks, training cleaning staff, conducting regular inspections, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and safety, and maintaining supply inventory.
Janitorial Coordinator will:
Actively participate in daily cleaning tasks alongside the janitorial team to ensure facility cleanliness and to model best practices and upholding cleaning protocols and safety standards; supervise, mentor, and evaluate janitorial staff performance; inspect completed tasks for quality assurance and provide real-time feedback and corrective instruction if necessary; conduct onboarding and ongoing training in cleaning protocols, safety procedures, and customer service; foster a positive team culture that values accountability and pride in work; create and maintain work schedule for janitorial team based on operational needs.
Monitor usage and maintain stock of cleaning supplies and PPE; coordinate maintenance and repair of janitorial equipment; research and recommend new tools or products to improve efficiency of department
Track attendance, timekeeping, and task completion; stay updated on public health guidelines and adjust cleaning practices as needed; respond to service request, complaints, or special cleaning needs promptly; collaborate with maintenance, security, or event teams to align cleaning with broader operations; serve as the liaison between janitorial staff and management.
Attend interdepartmental meetings and participate in planning for upcoming events and programs’ necessary housekeeping support including weekends, holidays and evenings.
All other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent; 2+ years of custodial or janitorial experience, with at least 1 year of supervisory experience.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching, lifting and carrying of supplies, equipment, or trash bags- typically up to 25-50 pounds.
Tolerance for exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and varying temperatures- especially when working outdoors.
Early mornings, nights, and weekends required.
Must be sighted and able to communicate over two-way radios.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of OSHA regulations, proficiency in sanitation protocols, floor care, waste disposal.
Use of cleaning equipment
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Additional Comments
Employee will use good judgement in making decisions in the cleaning of the museum.
