JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Under the direction of the Custodian Supervisor, the Senior Custodian performs skilled and semi-skilled cleaning, housekeeping and/or general maintenance duties in assigned areas. Ensures an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position oversees the preparation of facilities for classroom activities and campus events. This position exercises care and caution in the use of supplies and equipment while performing custodial tasks. This position is classified as an Essential Services Employee. Essential Services Employees maintain business operations for UTHSC, support the physical operations and safety of campus. This role involves performing various operations and services essential to maintain critical infrastructure and ensuring continuous operations.

Responsibilities
Cleans and sanitizes restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedures.
Sweeps and vacuums carpeting and floors using manual and power equipment.
Mops, scrubs, spot cleans, and maintains carpeting, tiles, and floors. Washes and buff floors with floor polisher.
Empties wastebaskets and garbage cans, place garbage in outside storage bin.
Refills restroom dispensers, toilet tissue, and soap, as needed.
Wipes interior windows and mirrors using common household equipment and cleaning products.
Cleans multi-level stairwells, elevators, docks and tunnel areas, entrances and exits including glass, doors and hardware, keeps outside area near exit and entrance clear of snow, cans, paper, etc.
Polishes, dusts, and wipes offices, furniture, and fixtures.
Sanitizes kitchen sinks and counters, lockers and benches, shower room walls, fixtures, and floors, drinking fountains, partitions and doors, and roll-up walk-off mats.
Uses and maintains assigned power equipment and hand tools; buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees.
Reports damages and acts of vandalism.
Performs and/or report minor maintenance repairs.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:

EXPERIENCE

Six (6) months of custodial or housekeeping experience. Housekeeping video and Hazcom and bloodborne pathogen training will be required upon hiring.

Must have a valid Driver’s License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of aspects of custodial cleaning and/or general maintenance duties and services.
Working knowledge of equipment utilized by custodial staff, e.g., vacuum cleaner and various mopping, sweeping, stripping machine, waxer/buffer, water pick-ups, dusting tools, etc.
Basic computer skills.
Good oral communications skills.
Skill in reading Standard English text in order to follow through on written orders, read labels on cleaning products, or instructions on equipment, and carry out assignments in a safe manner.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and a positive and respectful attitude with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrator, customers, and visitors.
Ability to maintain the highest quality of custodial services at a level consistent with University and department standards.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to stand, crawl, walk, and stoop; push, pull, lift, or lower objects weighting up to 50 lbs. Ability to work indoors in fluctuating temperatures. Ability to work under adverse situations and conditions, e.g., dirty, noisy, etc.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position may occasionally work weekends and evenings.
