Working under the supervision of kitchen leads and chefs, the Kitchen Assistant ensures safe, efficient, and timely preparation, packing, and distribution of meals. This seasonal position is critical to Second Harvest’s mission to combat food insecurity and provide children with healthy meals during the summer months when school is out. The ideal candidate is dependable, team-oriented, and passionate about helping others. ACCOUNTABILITIES

Support daily meal prep by cleaning, cutting, portioning, and packaging food items following SHFB safety and nutrition standards. Assist with receiving, unloading, storing, and organizing inventory, ingredients, and food supplies. Follow all health, sanitation, and food safety standards, including proper food handling, PPE use, and cleanliness of workspaces. Ensure food is prepared and packed accurately and according to site-specific requirements and delivery schedules. Assist with dishwashing, cleaning equipment, and maintaining a sanitized kitchen environment throughout the shift. Follow instructions from kitchen leads and chefs and work collaboratively with other team members to meet production timelines. Participate in daily kitchen checklists, including logging temperatures, food tracking, and quality control checks. Communicate any shortages, issues, or concerns to supervisors in a timely and proactive manner. Stand ready to assist with disaster response or other SHFB initiatives as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Based out of Second Harvest’s Lafayette facility or designated regional kitchen (e.g., Lake Charles, Abbeville). This is a physical position requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for long periods, and work in hot or cold environments (kitchen and cooler/freezer settings). May include early morning or rotating shifts depending on delivery and production needs.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education :

High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.

Experience, Skills, and Capabilities :

Prior experience in a kitchen, food service, catering, or warehouse environment is a plus. Commitment to SHFB’s mission of addressing food insecurity and improving community health. Team player with a positive attitude and willingness to learn. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately. Punctual, reliable, and capable of working independently or as part of a team. Basic understanding of food safety and sanitation practices (training provided if needed). Reliable transportation and the ability to report to work on time.

Preferred Qualifications:

ServSafe Certification or food handler card (or willingness to obtain). Experience working with children’s nutrition or in nonprofit/community kitchens.
