WORK OBJECTIVE

Ensures the health and safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. Provides customer service, and maintenance of the facilities and assists with the management of City’s aquatic programs; performs related work as required. Assists the Aquatics Coordinator or Head Lifeguard with the supervision of temporary, part-time lifeguard staff. Work is performed under regular supervision by the Aquatics Coordinator II, the Head Lifeguard, the Aquatics Supervisor, and/or the Aquatics & Recreation Program Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. Inspects the aquatic facility daily.
Eliminates and reports any hazardous conditions or unsafe equipment.
Assists with the supervision of the lifeguard staff.
Ensures the safety of aquatics patrons.
Observes and enforces aquatics rules and regulations for staff and the public.
Responds to emergency situations, performs rescue work, and administers first aid to victims as required.
Plans and organizes Junior Lifeguard Camp and Junior Lifeguard Summer Volunteer Program. Oversees the training and scheduling of participants for the volunteer program throughout the season.
Keeps necessary records up to date and submits to supervisor in a timely manner.
Ensures that all areas of the facility are properly cleaned.
Ensures that aquatic programs are carried out in a proper, efficient, and orderly manner with emphasis on personal primary programs assigned.
Handles routine public inquiries/complaints while referring complicated matters to supervisor.
Plans and organizes Pool-Side Birthday Party Program.
Assumes Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor (WSI) duties in their absence.
Performs other tasks as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Requires a High School Diploma or GED and twelve (12) months of experience as a Lifeguard. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Requires StarGuard Elite (SGE) Lifeguard Certification at the time of hire. Must have the ability to obtain an American Red Cross (ARC) Water Safety Instructor Certification within three (3) months of hire and SGE Lifeguard Instructor certification within six (6) months of hire. SGE Lifeguard Instructor and ARC Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications are preferred. Supervisory experience is also preferred. Lifeguard instructor and WSI certification from other organizations (ARC, YMCA, USLA, BSA, etc.) may be accepted contingent on ability to obtain SGE bridge within three (3) months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of aquatic rules, policies, and procedures.
Considerable ability as a swimmer; considerable skill in rescue work, cardio-pulmonary rescue (CPR), and first aid.
Ability to perform rescue work, CPR and First Aid.
Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
Ability to perform various job tasks in all types of weather conditions. Ability to operate most office equipment, including a computer.
Ability to develop and maintain a good work relationship with staff, supervisors, and the public. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
