Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatic Coordinator assits the director in administering aquatic programs and, particularly swim lessons and trainings for the association.
Responsibilities/Functions/Duties/Tasks:
The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Oversees the swim lesson program which includes all swim lessons, group, preschool, youth, adult and private lessons. This includes developing schedules for the swim lesson sessions and staffing.
- Oversees and develops training for staff, membership and the general public by teaching
ASHI, YMCA
Swim Instructor and Lifeguard Certification Courses and Basic level CPR/1st Aid.
- Serves as a swim lesson instructor, teaching at various levels as assigned and substitituting for other instructors as needed. May teach program classes or provide lifeguarding when needed.
- Keeps an adequate supply of skill sheets, progress reports, and daily logs available in the pool office.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationsips with program participants, member and voluntgeers within the community.
- Keeps all First Aid kids supplied and all safety equipment in working order.
- Ensures that all Aquatic staff stay up to date on in-service trainings, CPR, First Aid and other required trainings and certifications.
- Assumes responsibility for staff and program operation in the absence of the Aquatics Director.
- Assist Aquatics Director with scheduling of programs including outside contracts, community organizations and townships.
- Assists in recruiting, hiring, developing, scheduling and directing staff and volunteers as needed. Would assist in reviews and evaluations of staff performance for the swim lesson programming.
- Hold certifications in Swim Lesson Instructor as well as Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor in order to assist the Aquatic Director with trainings and designing in-services. There is also the possibility of assisting with the waterfront at Camp Y-Owasco.
- Ensures that staff completes required safety training, follow internal policies and provides guidance for policy violations in a timely manner.
- Attends required meetings and events, completes required training and responds to inquiries in a timely manner. Meetings may be held at other branches or other locations.
- Identifies and reponsds to child abuse according to the YMCA Youth Protection Policy.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Associates degree in Sports Management or related field.
- At least 2 years experience working in a program related to aquatics.
- Be at least 21 years of age and have lifeguard experience.
- Possession of the following certifications preferred or must obtain within 3 months of employment: 1. YMCA Lifeguarding (or equivalent) 2. Basic Life Support (BLS) 3. First Aid 4. Emergency Oxygen Administration 5. YMCA Swimming Instructor (or equivalent) 6. YMCA Lifeguard Instructor 7. ASHI Instructor
- Must have the necessary aquatic experience and knowledge to effectively lead swim lesson instruction classes and certification classes.
- Must possess leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with members, youth, parents, volunteers, staff and the general public.
- Must possess a high degree of safety consciousness, solid decision making skills and good judgment.
- Must have computer literacy sufficient to create and send emails, take online training, create spreadsheets and work with word processing programs.
- Possess effective writtend and oral communication skills.
- Must have access to reliable transportation to attend offsite meetings and events.

- While performing the duties of the this job, the employee is regularly required to communicated with other staff, members, program participants and volunteers.
- The employee is occasionally required to remain stationary for extended periods to work on a computer. This may involve repetitive motion of hands and fingers.
- Specific visual acuity to work on a computer and read written text. Will also need to distinguish colors, operate safety equipment and recognize program participants up to 80 feet away.
- Understands and employs proper lifesaving techniques in the pool and throughout the facility.
- Required to navigate around the pool perimeter and be able to stand for extended periods.
- Frequently lifts or moves up to 50 pounds or move up to 75 pounds.
- Recognize distress signals in and around the pool area.
- Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
Work Environment:
- The work environment is primarily indoors in a warm and humid environment with low to moderate noise levels.
Outdoor pool management may occur on a seasonal basis.
