Lifeguard – Seasonal (2025) Parks & Trails Department (This is a seasonal position for the summer.) Inclusion Through Diversity Cayuga County is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply. The Cayuga County Parks & Trails Department is accepting applications for the position of Lifeguard – Seasonal.
Pay Rate:
$19.00/hr. Candidates are required to submit to a drug screening prior to employment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1.Must be at least 16 years old at time of appointment (15 years is acceptable if employed at a facility where a supervisory Lifeguard is present); AND 2.Possession of a current American Red Cross Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate or American Heart Association Course “C” CPR certificate, or acceptable equivalent certificate. (Certification period must not exceed one year); AND 3.Possession of a current Lifeguard certification from a recognized certifying agency acceptable to the New York State Department of Health. (The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course is an acceptable certification).

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
These duties involve responsibility for performing routine patrol work at a bathing beach or swimming pool looking after the safety and welfare of swimmers and assisting in a swimming education program. Employees in this class aid in teaching swimming to children and adults as well as maintaining order and discipline of the area. Incumbents must be constantly alert and employ lifesaving resource techniques to assist swimmers who are experiencing difficulty. The work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures. Employees must maintain vigilance since considerable responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies is required. An error in judgment might result in serious accidents or loss of life. The incumbent may be asked to do other activities related to the worksite during times when the beach or pool are not busy. The incumbent does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
(Illustrative only) Stands watch or patrols bathing beach or swimming pool keeping swimmers within bounds and going to their aid when they are in trouble; Aids in teaching swimming to bathers and non-swimmers under supervision of a Water Safety Instructor; Coordinates swimming activities with other aspects of a general recreation program; Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid at the bathing beach or swimming pool; Keeps the swimming area free of glass and other debris; Maintains order and discipline and enforces safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents and injuries; Assists in the maintenance and repair of pool or beach facilities and equipment; Keeps simple records and makes reports of swimming activities and accidents occurring on the premises; When the beach is closed or not busy, may be required to assist in normal maintenance duties such as but not limited to lawn mowing, trimming, etc.; May be required to take fees and account for funds received; Performs other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of first aid, lifesaving, and rescue work as applied to accidents in the water; Good knowledge of rules and regulations governing the use of municipal swimming facilities; A high degree of skill in swimming and lifesaving; Ability to deal with public and to secure cooperation without unnecessary antagonism; Ability to respond quickly, calmly, and effectively in emergency situations; Ability to keep records and to make simple reports; Good observation; Mental alertness; Physical endurance; Excellent physical condition.
