This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lifeguard at Anytown YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintains active surveillance of the pool area. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model; completes related reports as required. Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area with

Must always be alert, keeping in mind that the safety of program participants is your primary responsibility must keep a neat and clean appearance Must provide vigilant, undistracted supervision of the pool Arrives at work 15 minutes (30 minutes if opening) early to clean, check chemicals, etc. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the EAP model. Completes related reports as required Must report fully all accidents and incidents on the correct forms; Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area Must be properly dressed according to set standards Must lock and unlock doors/gates to control entrance or exit of swimmers; by closing procedure turn Off sauna, steam room, spa Must check safety equipment when coming on duty and report any problems to the pool manager and Head Lifeguard Must enforce pool regulations for swimmers promptly and courteously Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving, reporting as necessary Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff. Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants Attends all staff meetings and in-service training Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities. Performs other duties as assigned Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth. Attends required abuse risk management training. Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors. Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements. Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum age of 16

Certifications:

Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
