Bus Monitor 4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars Lawsonville, NC 27022 EC Bus Moniter Full time with benefits 6 hours a day Bus Monitor Updated 11-8-21 Nature of Work This employee monitors student behavior and attends to the special needs of exceptional students while they are using school buses. The bus monitor assists the bus driver with the safety, movement, management, and care of children boarding, riding, and disembarking the school bus. The employee receives detailed instruction of the duties and responsibilities of this work. Independent judgment is exercised in emergencies by selecting the action to take from the ones that have been planned by higher authority. Improper use of special equipment for exceptional students could result in injury to those students. The employee serves under the direct supervision of the principal and/or assistant principal or other designee. Essential Job Duties Essential work duties of a Bus Monitor are collaborating with the bus driver, monitoring the behavior of children, taking disciplinary action when needed, assisting children with disabilities, and making sure all passengers are being transported based on students’ needs documented in their Individual Education Program. Illustrative examples of work Helps exceptional students in manipulating equipment they must use on the bus and entering and exiting the bus. Seats students in their assigned location. Monitors students’ behavior. Assists with medical needs, as appropriate. Reports problems and concerns of students to the designated authority. Intervenes between students having conflict. Maintain current knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures. Maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Perform others duties as assigned. Knowledge , Skills, and Abilities Skill in lifting and placing students comfortably. Skill in accurately operating and adjusting the special equipment. Ability to learn and remember the bus route. Ability to understand the individual needs of exceptional students. Understand and relate to children with special needs. Maintain regular attendance. Suggested Training and Experience High School Education and/or GED or any equivalent training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and ability to perform the job satisfactorily. Knowledge of health and safety regulations. Attend in-service training and meetings as needed. Physical Demands Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking. Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing. Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching. Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weights, up to 50 pounds Lift students according to established guidelines. Requires activities involving being around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, and exposure to dust, fumes and gases.
