Job Description
Head Start School Bus Monitor – “Dedicated Bus Monitor” 3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 241 W Grant St, New Castle, PA 16101 This position requires safe and effective monitoring of the children attending LCCAP Early Learning Programs during their transport between home and school. The highest level of service, safety, and confidentiality is e xpected which meets transportation program requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
may include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Ensures a safe environment for the children while riding the bus. Updates the Emergency Contact Binders with new Emergency Contact Cards when provided by the Early Learning Office. Marks the outdated cards with an “X” and ensures the form is shredded. At drop-off stops, Monitors must perform a two-step process before releasing a child from the school bus: 1. Check the adult’s photo identification to confirm their identity and name. 2. Check the child’s Emergency Contact Card to confirm that the person’s name is listed. Assists children while walking up and down the stairs of the bus. Ensures children are safely seated and secure in the child restraint seats before the bus moves and that they remain seated while the bus is in motion. Immediately reports to the Transportation Office any child whose height or weight may exceed the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the capacity of the seats. Completes Bus Incident Reports following any child’s unsafe behaviors, injuries, or illnesses occurring during the bus route, or any incidents occurring with parents or the public. At the end of the bus route, submit completed forms to the Transportation Office. Ensure the children’s rescue medicine bags are onboard the bus before picking up any children. When needed, and only according to the child’s individual health plan established by the Health Office, administers children’s rescue medication while on route. Responsible for building and maintaining positive relationships with children and families, and for responding professionally in challenging situations, including interactions with upset parents or disruptive children. Demonstrates a willingness to learn about autism and other developmental disabilities. Recognizes that challenging behavior often indicates a child is experiencing difficulty, not intentionally being difficult. Works collaboratively with staff to identify and apply effective classroom support strategies during bus transportation. Approaches all children and families with empathy, patience, and respect, regardless of background or circumstances. Responsible for promoting positive relationships and clear communication with coworkers and Early Learning staff who assist with bus transportation Responsible for performing post-trip inspections after all children have exited the school bus to ensure a child was not left behind on the bus. These checks must be performed at the end of each route, both morning and afternoon, without exception. Must sign LCCAP Head Start Manifest Cover Sheet to certify that these checks have been performed. In the event of an emergency, the Monitor must take directions from the Driver. The Monitor’s main responsibility is to ensure that the children remain safe and calm. The Monitor will assist the children with exiting the bus and ensure that they are all accounted for and stationed a safe distance from the school bus. No Monitor or Bus Driver is ever to take it upon his/herself to alter any stop without authorization from the Transportation Office. Attend monthly safety meetings and other training courses as required by management. Other duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bus Monitors are required to obtain FBI- Fingerprinting, Act 33 and 34 Clearances (Child Abuse and Criminal Record Check), a pre-employment physical and tuberculosis test, and maintain CPR/First Aid Certifications. EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE
High School Graduate or
GED. LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, policies and procedures. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential job duties.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must obtain CPR/First Aid within new-hire probationary period and maintain throughout employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, employees must be able to: 1. Talk, hear, read, see, stand, walk, stoop, and reach. 2. Maneuver through narrow school bus aisle-ways while the bus is in motion. 3. Must be able to sit and ride in a school bus for up to two (2) hours at a time. 4. Frequent climbing of bus steps. 5. Assist preschool children (up to 60 pounds) onto the bus seat and secure them into the integrated child restraint seat. 6. During emergency evacuation drills, and during a real emergency, safely assist children from the bus using emergency exits.
