The City of Jacksonville Recreationand Parks Department is working to create community by makingJacksonville the best place to live, work, and play. TheJacksonville Commons Recreation Complex is the largest green spaceof all the parks and recreation areas within City limits. General Description:

The City of Jacksonville is looking forRecreation Aides to assist the Community Services Division withactivities involved with the Before & After School program andRecreation Department rentals. Recreation Aides perform responsiblesemiskilled work assisting with a variety of special events,programs and activities in recreation facilities; does related workas required. Work is performed under regular supervision of theRecreation Center Supervisor, Assistant Center Supervisor orRecreation Program Assistant. Before & After School Program Grades K-8 Qualified staff provide anactive and safe environment for students before and after schoolduring traditional school calendar days. Activities will includehomework time, snack, arts & crafts, and more. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Assisting with the operation and services at a recreation center;planning and supervising special events, activities andparticipants; preparing and maintaining records and files.

  • Answers telephone and supplies general information or forwards toappropriate personnel.
  • Assists in organizing and supervising general and specialrecreational and leisure time programs and activities at therecreation center.
  • Assists with daily operation of classes and activities.
  • Assists in coordinating center activities in the areas of artsand crafts, summer, after school, educational and informational andathletic programs.
  • Prepares and maintains reservation and attendance records andreports and other regular and special records and reports.
  • Supervises the daily maintenance and security of the center,facilities and equipment; reports damages and losses.
  • Plans and supervises special recreational events in a variety ofprogram areas.
  • Transports program participants on field trips, shoppingexcursions, camping trips, etc…
  • Provides information to participants and citizens concerning anyupcoming activities.
  • Provides supervision during rental events of the recreationcenter.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Required Education and Experience Special Requirements:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent tograduation from high school and 6 months to 2 years experience inorganized recreational programs. May require possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid inthe State of North Carolina. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the principles, rules, materials and equipmentrequirements of a variety of recreational activities; ability togive routine instructions; general knowledge of the philosophy andobjectives of public recreation, psychology and sociology, and ofpersonal health and hygiene; general knowledge of the first aidpractices and techniques; ability to adhere to program standardsand objectives outlined by superiors, and to lead and instructgroups in games, sports and other recreational activities; abilityto resolve disputes with firmness and impartiality; ability to meetand deal tactfully with the public.
