Job Description

Recreation Coordinator Performs administrative, physical, and general operational work for a comprehensive municipal recreation department. Responsibilities include planning, programming, developing, organizing, promoting, ensuring safety, and maximizing utilization and general care of all City recreation programs and facilities. Exercises immediate supervision of volunteers and program officials. This position reports directly to the Recreation Leader.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Provides planning, developing, coordinating, scheduling, and promotion of community-wide events, recreational and athletic programs; demonstrating responsiveness, creativity, and innovation 2. Provides coordination, oversight, and supervision for the City’s athletic and recreation programs, including the recruiting, training, scheduling, and management of all certified officials 3. Prepares and coordinates game schedules, program activities, and assists with developing the annual Recreation Department budget 4. Implements and utilizes fiscally sound purchasing practices and possesses working knowledge of the budget approval process 5. Assists with set-up, changes/adjustments, and breakdown of facility furniture, athletic fields and sports park grounds to include, but not limited to mowing, dragging, lining, prepping, etc. 6. Ensures the Recreation Leader has been informed of any information/issues of relevance 7. Maintains an open line of communication with Recreation employees, City staff, the department director, and the public 8. Responsible for gathering price quotes, facilitating purchases for materials and services, greets and answers customers’ questions in an accurate and timely manner, and records and files program participant information for city records 9. Ensures well-rounded recreation programs are implemented for all people in the community to enjoy 10. Enforce rules and regulations of sports facilities to maintain discipline and ensure safety 11. Inspect and maintain equipment to maintain supply levels and safety 12. Attends work-related meetings and programs as needed 13. Maintains affiliations with organizations for programming park activities 14. Works closely and coordinates with staff to ensure event and recreational facilities are prepared timely and maintained in a manner that enhances and positively promotes City events and programming 15. Develops financial spreadsheets for tracking project cost and creates budgets for programs and events 16. Ability to work a flexible 40-hour work week, including 11:00 am – 8:00 pm shifts, on-call, and Saturdays during select athletic seasons when needed Serves to assist other departments within the Community Services Division as needed or directed 17. Must be available to work in the event of a disaster to assist with recovery response efforts. (These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS

AND ABILITIES

1. Comprehensive knowledge of all phases of community recreation activities and events; and their administration, inclusive of budget management 2. Proven ability to develop and execute a well-rounded program of recreation and athletic activities designed in response to growing community needs 3. Proven ability to develop and manage recreation programs and events of varying size and complexity 4. Ability to understand and compose industry literature and spreadsheets 5. Knowledge of rules & regulations regarding both youth & adult sports programs 6. Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, practices, procedures, and the ability to perform duties within potential time restraints 7. Knowledge of sports field maintenance and preparation, and the general operation of turf maintenance equipment, tools, and other equipment necessary to perform related work 8. Ability to facilitate cooperation with and interpret recreation philosophies to City authorities, public and private groups and agencies, members of the media, and the general public 9. Ability to create and maintain a positive image with members of the public 10. Ability to motivate and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and to promote and maintain high morale and enthusiasm; consistently demonstrates strong judgment 11. Ability to select, develop, motivate, and maintain effective relationships with volunteers and officials for youth and adult athletic programs 12. Knowledge of payroll procedures for program officials and the ability to maintain appropriate records 13. Strong Microsoft Office (Publisher, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) proficiency and creativity in developing materials, brochures, electronic announcements, and assisting with press releases 14. Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and public speaking skills 15. Ability to work extended hours beyond the 40-hour work week, including select evenings, weekends, and holidays 16. Work requires the ability to read, interpret, understand, and write letters, memos, contracts, and rental agreements 17. Experience planning, managing, and evaluating youth, adult, and senior programs 18. Ability to multitask in a challenging environment 19. Proven conflict resolution skills 20. Ability to interpret the needs of the community and communicate effectively with the public to program recreational activities relative to these needs

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Parks and Recreation Administration, Leisure Services, Sports Management, or a closely related field is preferred 2. A minimum of 3 years of direct experience in a related field 3. Conflict resolution training preferred 4. Government work-related experience preferred (A comparable amount of training, education, or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS

1. Valid Florida Driver’s License 2. Valid CPR/First Aid certifications required or must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment 3. A current professional certification (e.g.

CPRP, CPRE, CSEP

) is strongly preferred
