The Assistant Director is responsible for contributing to the overall goals of the Department of Student Life and Ministry by providing direction to integrated studentlearning, learning outcomes based assessment, and student success strategies. A successful staff member is dedicated to: applying best practices in pedagogy, fostering students’ ability to integrate academic knowledge with experiences outside of the classroom, thinking critically and innovatively about student success interventions, effectively communicating with students, peers and supervisors, and collaborating with campus and community partners. The primary responsibilities of this position include the planning and implementation of Campus Recreation, Commuter Student initiatives and serving on the advising team for Fraternity and Sorority Life. Examples of Duties Intramural Sports Develop, oversee and administer a comprehensive and progressive Intramural program.
Hire, supervise, and evaluate intramural officials and student employees.
Provide ongoing training for intramural officials and student employees in the areas of emergency protocol, conflict resolution, sports rules, officiating and game management.
Oversee program planning and implementation, including rule revisions, IMLeagues, equipment inventory and evaluation of intramural leagues and tournaments.
Plan and implement a student development curriculum for Intramural participants.
Coordinate large scale programming that fosters campus-wide engagement, school spirit, and community building through friendly competition and collaboration across students, faculty, and staff (ex. Faculty/Staff vs. Student Basketball Game during Loyola Week).
Club Sports
Coordinate operations of the Club Sports program.
Serve as the advisor of all club sport teams and assist with the development of officers and their members.
Assist with club sports operations, including organization chartering and renewal, funding and sponsorship, event and tournament planning, practice schedules, travel, and competition planning.
Develop and implement club sports officer and coach training, specifically in the areas of emergency protocol, conflict resolution, and wellness.
Oversee club sports documentation, including handbook and waivers.
Advise Club Sports Council, specifically providing leadership development, facilitating Club Sports SGA funding, and coordinating best practice and information sharing.
Meet regularly with club sports coaches to information share and problem solve.
Plan and implement a student development curriculum for club sports members.
Outdoor Recreation
Send weekly e-communications to highlight events around the city and on campus.
Collaborate, plan and implement retreats for physical and spiritual development (i.e. semesterly Wilderness Retreat)
Plan and execute large-scale programming to promote outdoor engagement and student wellness through accessible, inclusive recreational activities on campus greenspaces (Such as Rec-ing the Res Quad).
Develop and manage pop-up intramural events that promote holistic wellness by encouraging physical activity, stress relief, and social connection among a diverse student population.
Coordinate and facilitate one-day sports tournaments, including event logistics, marketing, and on-site supervision, to offer competitive and social opportunities for commuter and residential students alike (i.e., pickleball tournaments, flag football tournaments, kickball tournaments, etc.).
Commuter Student Services
Responsible for the continual development and implementation of a comprehensive commuter student services program, specifically providing outreach, support services (i.e. transportation insecurity initiatives and locker program) and programming.
Serve as the advisor to the Commuter Student Association, providing leadership and student development training as well as assistance in program planning and execution.
Manage the Commuter Student Assistant Program, specifically supervising staff, planning and implementing curriculum, and overseeing program outreach plan.
Develop and implement a communication strategy for commuter students, regarding student success, health and wellness, belonging etc… (i.e. monthly commuter newsletter, e-communications, text-messaging campaigns and social media.)
Develop, implement and assess a robust slate of educational, recreational, and relationship-building programs for the Satchmo’s Commuter Lounge.
Manage operations of the Commuter Student Lounge, including maintenance requests, facilities and equipment rental.
Work alongside Residential Life to plan and maintain an off campus housing website and resources.
Advisory Team Member for Fraternity and Sorority Life
Effectively manage one council, advising on governing board operations, including budget, risk management, accountability processes, and evaluation.
Advise one council, meet with their executive board weekly, providing leadership development and helping implement educational and belonging programs.
Advise chapters that fall under council, including meeting with the chapter presidents weekly, coordinating regular meetings and trainings with alumni advisors, helping plan and implement events, verifying that risk management protocols are being followed and mandating that chapters are following local, state, federal and university law and policy (such as anti-hazing, Title IX, discriminatory and harassment, and alcohol policies).
Serves as a liaison between the inter/national headquarters, chapter and the University.
Review and update the Fraternity and Sorority Life Assessment, as well as coordinate FSLA presentations for all FSL chapters, and send out semesterly ranks.
Administrative and Partnerships
Execute yearly campus recreation events to highlight intramurals, Athletics, and Club Sports.
Develop, conduct, and analyze assessments related to student engagement and monitor national trends.
Post events on University and HowlConnect calendars.
Prepare and administer appropriate budgets with expenditures subject to approval.
Additional Responsibilities:
Assist with the organization a range of intentional, large-scale programmatic efforts to promote: connection to the campus community, retention growth, and student satisfaction. Specifically, managing late night programs during Wolf Pack Welcome Orientation Program.
Serve on Student Affairs or University committees as appointed.
Assume the duties of a Campus Security Authority (CSA), including but not limited to, reporting crimes as defined through the Clery Act and providing annual reporting statistics.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Evening and/or weekend work is required.
Typical Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum of 1-year professional experience in Student Affairs.
Experience in planning and implementation of small and large scale campus events.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Beliefs supportive of the principles of a Jesuit education and the goals of the University.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Sports Administration, Physical Education, Recreation, College Student Personnel or related area.
More than 1-year professional experience preferred.
Ability to set priorities and solve problems independently.
Experience with health and wellness initiatives.
Ability to motivate and collaborate with student led groups.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, student-centered and collaborative office.
Must possess and maintain a current valid driver’s license as a condition of employment, and must also be able to successfully pass any driver background information investigation and any driver education courses required by Risk Management.
