Performs intermediate, skilled human support work in organizing, planning, preparing, coordinating and/ or conducting recreational programs, county-wide for all County citizens and visitors. The Recreation Leader also assists with the daily operations at Western Park Community Center. Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the planning, organizing and/or coordinating comprehensive recreational programs for all segments of the population under the direction of supervisor. Work includes performing a variety of public information to advertise and promote programs, evaluating effectiveness of all programs offered while recommending changes, and to keep inventory of supplies needed to perform required tasks and programs. Work involves supervising participants and volunteers as needed, and assisting in other areas of the Department from time to time as needed. Duties also include working with co-sponsors and a variety of interest groups in planning and implementing recreation programs and events. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Program Supervisor and is evaluated in terms of program effectiveness, observation, periodic discussions and public acceptance/feedback. Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Plans, organizes and supervises a variety of games and activities at the Recreation Center.
- Opens and closes the Center; supervises activities at center while on duty.
- Ensures safety and proper behavior of program participants.
- Assists with cleaning and maintenance; helps set up the Center for special events and activities.
- Ensures Recreation Center is free of trash and debris. Additional Job Duties

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Considerable knowledge of the philosophy, principles, practices and techniques of professional recreation work.
- Knowledge of various sports and recreation activities such as, but not limited to, tennis, archery, volleyball, basketball, fitness instruction, etc.
- Must be creative and work in a team environment.
- Considerable knowledge of the techniques and disciplines of implementing activities.
- Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and implement a comprehensive recreational program.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county employees, community agencies and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
- Ability to use a computer and be trained in the use of our park reservation system.
- Ability to be responsible for opening and closing the Center independently. Physical Requirements
- Work requires the exertion of up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and grasping.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instruction to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
- Visual acuity is required for color perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles of equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.
g. business office, light traffic). Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school, and be at least 18 years of age and considerable experience in recreational, athletic, arts programming, or leading activities in a recreational setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements Possession of valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire. Must be 18 years of age. Position requires some evening and weekend work.
