Job Description
Serves as a working supervisor in coordinating, scheduling, and assisting in recreational programs, provides customer service, enforces rules, ensures safe and appropriate recreation facilities and program services are provided.
- Illustrative Examples of WorkOversees all day-to-day on-site recreation program functions; provides recreational programs and social services programs and activities, including special-needs and special-interest programs, special events and excursions, and social services programsResponsible for the implementation and management of on-site cash handling procedures; registers and enrolls program participants, including certification of program eligibility; provides customer service and general information, and resolves problems and customer service inquiries within scope of authorityCoordinates, schedules, trains, and monitors the work of part-time staff and volunteers; assures staff maintains safe and aesthetically pleasing recreation venues and events and adheres to policies and procedures for efficient and safe operationsCoordinates and facilitates recreation activities, classes, workshops, social events, and special programs; supervises recreation programs, facility and event patrons; monitors activities and enforces rules and safety standards; assists, supervises and coaches participants in various recreation programs; promotes a positive learning environment and good personal behavior; reports and resolves complaints, requests, safety conditions, security issues and illegal activitiesRecognizes, avoids, reports, and resolves unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries, complaints, special requests, safety conditions, security issues and illegal activities within scope of authorityMaintains program accounting and administrative records; updates and maintains database of activity schedules, classes and special events; coordinates event schedules and reconciles schedule conflicts; maintains paperwork, registration forms and event calendarsPromotes good relationships with neighborhood and community groups and other agencies; may provide outreach functions with schools, parents and general public to promote program activities and coordinate utilization of facilitiesPlans, coordinates, and schedules activities and services for recreation programs and special events to provide recreational opportunities in a safe, fun, healthy, and inviting environment; recreation activities include sports and aquatics programs, athletic contests, sporting events, games, classes, youth enrichment programs, wellness classes, special adult programs, and pre-school and after-school programs and events•
Knowledge of:
Basic principles and practices of recreation techniques and programsBasic computer applications involving word processing, data entry, and standard report generation, and record keeping practicesCity policies and proceduresCustomer service principles and methodsFederal, State and City safety rules and regulations including occupational hazardsPurpose, use, and benefits of recreational and social programs and activitiesRules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using municipal recreational facilities, programs, and equipmentSafe driving techniques in all road conditionsTechniques for dealing with the public, in person, and over the telephoneThe rules, regulations, policies, and operating procedures of the Parks and Recreation Department

- Education and ExperienceGraduation from high school or GED equivalency and two (2) years of full-time (equivalent) experience; OR experience working in recreation programs performing facilities service functions, working in programs for seniors and individuals with disabilities, or working with elderly persons and persons with disabilities; OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience defined in the Illustrative Examples of Work•Special Requirements, Licenses, and CertificatesCPR and First AidMay also require a State of NC food handlers permit and/or completion of Safe Serve training•
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Physical RequirementsModerate physical demands; strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; frequent lifting and moving of supplies and equipment; ability to operate delivery equipment; and, heavy use of a personal computer.
Work EnvironmentPrimary work environment is in a City recreation facility and/or outdoors, which may include working under adverse weather conditions; some positions require working in a commercial kitchen; may be required to work overtime, and evening, weekend, swing, and holiday shifts; may be required to wear a City-provided uniform.
