DESCRIPTION BENEFITS GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs intermediate work in conducting a variety of specialized programs and activities in an activity center or similar facility; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Recreation Division Center Supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over assigned center personnel. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and noise. Worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Planning, scheduling, coordinating and supervising the activities and part-time staff at a recreation center; overseeing the preparation and maintenance of files and records. Plans and administers a diversified program suited to the needs of the center’s participants and potential participants. Receives, receipts and accounts for program fees. Promotes center activities by preparing and distributing promotional brochures. Works with outside agencies to plan and present programs aimed at a diverse population. Conducts Arts and Craft programs, leads sports activities and games, field trips, and special events at the center. Recruits volunteers for various programs. Schedules and supervises use of City facilities by participant groups, enforces rules and regulations, and maintains order and discipline. Prepares information for program brochures. Prepares reports on activities; requests materials and supplies. Supervises or assists in the maintaining of cleanliness and order of the recreation center. Prepares facilities, equipment and grounds for center activities; maintains security. Maintains personnel and activity reports; fills out accident reports and administers first aid. Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the principles, rules, materials and equipment requirements of a variety of recreation activities and ability to give routine instructions; general knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation, psychology, and sociology, general knowledge of first aid practices and techniques; ability to adhere to program standards and objectives outlined by superiors, and to lead and instruct groups in games, sports and other recreational activities; ability to resolve disputes with firmness and impartiality; ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education or experience equivalent to Bachelor’s degree, and moderate experience in supervising organized recreational activities and care of recreational facilities and equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of an appropriate commercial driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina or the ability to obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of employment is preferred. Possession of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic First Aid certifications or the ability to obtain appropriate certifications within 3 months of employment.
