DEFINITION

The employee is under the supervision of the Facility Programmer. Directions are usually specific and independent judgment is needed to complete some tasks. The employee is responsible for the smooth operation and supervision of activities and programs in the recreation facility during an assigned work shift. The employee is a roving person who assists in the overall operation of the center. The employee performs other duties as assigned.

This is a part-time position with an hourly rate of $15.00 hour

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION

The employee will work mainly indoors at the recreation facility. The employee will operate telephones, cash registers, calculators, copy machine and other modern office equipment. The employee will operate a computer/ID system that will handle many aspects of the daily operation of a recreation facility. Intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, and walking is required. The employee may be exposed to loud noise. The employee will have occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens. The employee will use various pieces of equipment necessary to conduct public recreation activities. The employee may have to perform minor maintenance chores. The employee may be required to lift objects weighing more than 25 pounds in order to accomplish tasks. The employee will work an assigned shift, which may include evenings, weekends, and holiday time.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Supervise other full and part-time staff on weekends and holidays, making sure that all proper work functions are carried out. Monitors equipment and areas in the facility to ensure that they are in a good state of repair, are used in a safe and proper manner and that all rules are being enforced and observed. Must make continuous “rounds” through the building to check for spills, to check on proper usage of equipment and building areas, to watch for vandalism or custodial or maintenance problems. Ensures safety of persons and property in the facility. Enforces department rules, regulations, work methods and procedures. Handles minor or major problems in a professional manner. Contacts the appropriate personnel in the event of an emergency. Supervises free play activities. Completes various reports and records as required. Assist in the set-up of rooms and areas as required for each day’s rental schedule. Helps set up for activities such as erecting volleyball nets, tables, chairs, moving bleachers, etc… Operates the computer system when necessary. Answers the telephone and directs calls to proper personnel, supervises and participates in conducting classes in sports, arts & crafts, and similar activities when necessary. Perform related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of principles and practices of recreation and facility management. Knowledge of operation, care, and maintenance of recreation equipment. Knowledge of the rules, regulations and equipment of various games and sports and recreational activities. Knowledge of and ability to perform all functions of front desk personnel to fill in on breaks and in emergencies. Ability to operate various pieces of office equipment and a computer system when necessary. Ability to organize, instruct and conduct recreational activities. Ability to supervise large groups, including children, to ensure safety standards and the orderly integration of all programs. Ability to take charge and make quick decisions in situations of misconduct or emergency. Ability to make recommendations for suspension or for safety considerations in these situations. Ability to appear to work on time and notify the appropriate personnel if unable to work. Ability to present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and written. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: Graduation from or currently enrolled in an accredited high school or GED equivalent. Good communication skills, both verbal and written. Experience working with the public. Experience working with a computer system is helpful. Some community recreation management/organization experience as an intern or equivalent.
