Job Description
Recreation Programmer City of Springfield, TN Springfield, TN 37172 JOB Purpose of JobPerform complex tasks that includes the planning and facilitation of the city’s recreational programs and special events.
Essential Job DutiesFacilitate all aspects of recreational programs for the city, including but not limited to, the development, organization, implementation, promotion, and supervision of programs.
Observe the implementation and progress of new and current recreational programs.
Research and recommend new programs to the parks and recreation director.
Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers and coaches of recreational programs.
Collaborate with local and/or state organizations that provide similar services and programs.
Prepare the agenda and minutes for and attend the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting as well as attend other departmental meetings as required.
Ensure the city is providing diverse programming for residents including various age groups, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
Assist in the preparation of policies, rules, and guidelines for the department.
Assist in the planning, organization, and execution of special events hosted by the city.
Other Job DutiesOrganize and maintain a filing system for each activity and program.
Collaborate with the city’s public affairs coordinator to ensure all publicity techniques and resources are utilized to promote the department’s programs. Complete and process grant applications.
Maintain city facility rental contracts and a calendar of events to track rentals, as well as collecting and receipting payments for the contracts. Perform other duties as required.
Primary Job ChallengesStaying up-to-date on recreational programming trends and changes in the industry. Effectively resolving complaints from program or sports league participants and/or parents. Coordination of scheduling across multiple area sports leagues and programs.
Maintaining constant communication with parents, volunteers, community organizations, sports league officials, and businesses.
Equipment OperatedPersonal computer with associated software and basic office equipment such as a copier, printer, and calculator.
Employee will operate an automobile and/or truck with a two-way radio.
Key Competencies RequiredKnowledge of city and departmental policies and regulations. Knowledge of recreational programs including fitness and sports leagues. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with local organizations, businesses, and the media. Ability to resolve conflict effectively and professionally.
Ability to take initiative to develop new ideas and complete assigned tasks.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, program participants, and the general public.
Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentEmployee will work both indoors and outdoors and will sit, stand, stoop, walk, and lift light and heavy objects (more than 25 pounds). Employee may be required to work evening and weekend hours as programming needs require.
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
Graduation from a standard high school and experience equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities. Experience in recreational programming preferred.
Required Certifications/Licenses:
Must possess a valid Class D driver license issued by the State of Tennessee. Must pass a physical examination based on the essential functions of the job given by the city’s designated physician.
