Activities associated with the job include assisting with directing and planning the work of the Department of Tourism and its employees. Activities associated with the job include assisting with overseeing public relations activities, tourism operations, special events, the city mail room, and the LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge, preparing and administering the tourism budget, coordinating promotional and tourist related activities with civic, business, corporate, historical and cultural groups, coordinating departmental activities with local, regional and state tourism agencies and attractions. Job responsibilities require thorough knowledge of marketing, advertising and sales techniques and practices, thorough knowledge of sales contracts and agreements related to sponsored events, extensive knowledge of promotions, finances and customer service, extensive supervisory experience and excellent organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills. Job performance is evaluated by the Director of Tourism through the review of daily organization and effectiveness of Department of Tourism, Office of Special Events, and LeConte Event Center operations, knowledge and expertise of all aspects of the department’s marketing, sales, and public relations programs, ability to effectively supervise and direct the activities of departmental staff, responsiveness to the needs of city businesses along with city’s residents, and organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills. Illustrative Examples of Work Assist with the development, planning, organization and implementation of tourism marketing, tourism development and special promotional activities. Assist with the operation of the Leconte Center at Pigeon Forge, when needed. Assist with the development and production of Special Events. Assist with overseeing the city’s Mail Room. Assist in supervising the Marketing, LeConte, Tourism Operations, and Special Events staff. Assist with making decisions for the hiring, promotions, discipline, counseling, training and safety of all employees in consultation with the Director of Tourism. Assist in developing and implementing the Tourism Department budget. Assist LeConte Center sales and group tour sales activities, when needed. Assist in planning and coordinating marketing campaigns promoting the cultural, historic and entertainment venues of the city. Coordinates promotional and tourist activities and special events with civic, business, corporate, historical and cultural groups. Assist in coordinating the development and production of print and non-print media. Assist in coordinating activities with advertising agencies to create new consumer and trade advertisements. Assist in overseeing the production of meeting planner and group tour planner. Assists in planning and implementing advertising programs and developing new and innovative approaches to promote the city. Assist the city ad agency with media tours when needed. Assist with overseeing the production of visitors’ service publications. Assist in coordinating and supervising the update of the city’s website. Analyzes market research and assists with making decisions pertaining to advertisement placement. Represents the city at travel shows and travel industry association meetings. Prepares reports of tourism activities and initiatives and makes public presentations when required. Works with staff, clients and corporate sponsors to create, develop and implement marketing strategies, ideas, concepts and programs. Develops and maintains effective relationships with area hospitality and tourist attraction management personnel. Performs related duties as required. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a B.A. (B.S.) Degree in tourism, hospitality, marketing, public administration, business or a related field; minimum of 4 years of experience in a destination marketing organization including 2 years of supervisory experience; ability to effectively supervise and direct the activities of staff in accordance with established policies and procedures; thorough experience developing, implementing and monitoring departmental budgets; ability to handle confidential and complex information; excellent written and verbal communication skills, considerable experience working with computer software applications, strong organizational, interpersonal, and decision making skills; or any equivalent combination of education or experience to provide the knowledge, abilities and skills: Considerable knowledge of sales techniques, methods and practices. Considerable knowledge of sales contracts and agreements related to sponsored events and activities. Considerable knowledge of promotions, services and operational activities of the LeConte center. Considerable knowledge of local and regional tourist attractions, hotels and restaurants, excursions, transportation services, etc. Considerable knowledge of budgeting techniques and methods including the monitoring of revenues and expenditures, use of internal controls, reconciliation of accounts, etc. Considerable knowledge of effective supervisory techniques and practices including the selection, evaluation, motivation, discipline and/or discharge of staff. Thorough knowledge of survey techniques and methods utilized to determine effective advertising and marketing techniques and practices. Ability to effectively supervise and direct the activities of departmental personnel. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local and regional tourism officials, hotel and restaurant management staff, etc. Ability to prioritize personal time and activities to meet established deadlines and reporting requirements. Ability to analyze survey data and other information and make appropriate decisions pertaining to advertisement and marketing campaigns. Ability to develop and implement creative and effective marketing and advertisement initiatives to promote the city. Ability to make effective and informative presentations to local and regional civic and business groups, trade organizations, marketing agencies, etc. Ability to work with departmental staff and create, develop and implement effective marketing ideas, concepts and programs. Skill in negotiating contracts and agreements pertaining to tourism, marketing and advertising activities. Physical Requirements This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; Work requires standing, walking, fingering and repetitive motions; Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; The worker not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
