Job Description
Job Title Assistant Department Manager Position Overview Position Objective:
Align extrusion department to provide strategic succession planning. Assist the department manager by leading Extrusion team through engineering, technical, and safety assignments using manufacturing engineering practices and principles. Leverage, and encourage, the implementation of manufacturing methods and processes to support extrusion, safety, product quality, quantity, waste goals, and objectives. Assist the department by leading shipping/receiving and blending associates through day-to-day material management, customer fulfillment, and planning. Essential Duties (considering job knowledge, job environment, effort, manipulative skill, judgment, safety knowledge and responsibility): Comply with procedures found in SMS. Perform all job duties using safe work methods. Utilize the Shaw Way as guidance for decision making. Comply with Corporate Absenteeism and Tardiness Policy. Work overtime as required. Other duties as assigned by Department Manager. Attend and participate in daily tier meetings. Interface with corporate and division support groups as needed. Coordinate activities of Department in the absence of the Department Manager. Ensure incident investigations and CA/PA items completed in a timely manner. Maintain performance “Score Cards” for each shift and align team to facility goals. Maintain KPI charts for department and ensure data is regularly/routinely updated. Lead Shipping/Receiving and Blending associates to ensure expectations are met with regards to safety, quality, and daily shipment of fiber and other materials. Manage day-to-day of Plant 63 Operations Ensure material inventories are maintained and optimized based on production needs of the facility. Execute daily and weekly production schedule. Lead reliability initiatives within the department to ensure all transport equipment related to material transport and convey is well maintained and operates reliably. Ensure accuracy in measurement of silo, raw material inventories. Maintain accuracy of inventory data to ensure accuracy in material tracking and usage reports. Maintain accurate levels of raw material are maintained in silos and communicate plans to blending team in managing raw material, bulk shipments. Work with training and HR to ensure suitable cross training for facility. Ensure that process changes and color changes are completed efficiently and correctly. Any out of spec conditions should be escalated to appropriate Manager. Assist supervisors in general problem solving to help remove obstacles on day-to-day performance. Assist engineering/cross functional teams to improve existing products and processes. Lead, as directed, problem solving and continuous improvement efforts to resolve operational, manufacturing, and maintenance challenges to prevent operational delays, eliminate bottlenecks and ensure minimal costs. Provide engineering support by troubleshooting problems in Extrusion and implement solutions. Monitor and debug new methods and procedures to ensure system efficiencies. Design manufacturing processes within schedule and budgetary parameters. Communicate as directed with downstream processing departments about any processing problems encountered. Coordinate Statistical Process Control methods with Extrusion supervisors and operators. Monitor SYRs run in Extrusion and issue reports on processability. Interface with other manufacturing departments to address and resolve engineering technical issues. Ensure all plant rules and safety rules are being followed. Maintain high level of housekeeping standards. Attend meetings concerning department or plant matters as needed. Resolve employee complaints/issues. Ensure all employees are being treated fairly and consistently. Use Lean/Six Sigma Tools for continuous improvement. Perform audits as required. Support PRIDE goals. Follow all applicable Lockout/Tag-out procedures. Non-Essential Duties (considering job knowledge, job environment, effort, manipulative skill, judgment, safety knowledge and responsibility): Assists other department personnel as needed.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand or walk for eight (8) to twelve (12) hours. Ability to bend, stoop, squat, lift, carry and reach occasionally. Ability to lift packages weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds occasionally. Ability to handle the stress of meeting goals and deadlines. Ability to travel occasionally. Ability to distinguish between colors. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs as necessary during workday.
Other Requirements:
Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field preferable engineering. Must have at least 1-2 years of experience in a related field or its equivalent. Must possess good interpersonal, communication, organizational and leadership skills. Comply with all company policies, SAFE and SMS procedures. Actively participate in the PRIDE and FIBER Processes. Must be able to work holidays, weekends and overtime as required. Plant WM is a tobacco-free facility.
Training Requirements:
Must complete the Orientation training session if needed. Must complete job requirements training as defined in the training procedures. Must complete PRIDE Training. Must complete MSDS/Chemical Right To Know (CRTK) Training. Must complete all required SAFE training. Must complete AODocs training. Must attend Anti-Harassment and Open-Door Policy training. Must be willing to attend Lean/Six Sigma Black Belt training.
Tools, Equipment, & Material Requirements:
Responsible for safety equipment issued including safety glasses and earplugs. Responsible for materials issued including standard office supplies and appropriate software. Responsible for equipment necessary to perform assigned tasks including personal computer, printer, copier and calculator. Follow all applicable environmental efforts and procedures for proper disposal of used materials.
Safety & Security Requirements:
Must always maintain a safe and clean work area. Must report any unsafe conditions to supervision. Must report all accidents, no matter how slight, to supervision immediately. Must always wear personal protective equipment while in the designated areas. Must comply with all plant and department safety rules and regulations. Must adhere to the corporate IS Security Requirements.
