Role Summary
The Bar Manager at Pilgrim’s Inn is a hands-on role responsible for overseeing all aspects of the tavern s operations. This includes managing a small team of one bartender and one barback, maintaining inventory, developing drink offerings, and delivering outstanding service. In addition to bartending regularly, the Bar Manager may support the overall restaurant team by filling in as a host or server on occasion. About Pilgrim’s Inn Pilgrim’s Inn, in the heart of Deer Isle, Maine, is under new ownership for the 2025 season. With overnight amodations in the main building, which dates back to 1793, and three cottages across 2+ acres of waterfront land, the inn offers guests an inviting retreat. Our on-site dining room and tavern are integral parts of the experience. We serve breakfast to inn guests; dinner and drinks to the public 5+ nights a week; and we aim to introduce a new lunch or brunch service. Indoor dining includes 56 seats spread across the dining room and tavern, with an additional 40 outdoor seats on the deck and landscaped grounds. Pilgrim’s Inn houses the only restaurant and bar in the village of Deer Isle, and it plays an important role in the island s culture and identity. As stewards of this historic property, the new owners aremitted to strengthening its role in themunity, and our food and beverage program plays an important role in achieving this goal. Overnight guests have enjoyed the hospitality of this storied place since it first operated as a boarding house in the 1890s. Role Mission To oversee a tavern that garners widespread acclaim and press recognition, ensuring a full house of visitors and locals throughout the season. And to develop a beverage program that enhances our food across our dining room, tavern, and event experiences.
Pilgrim’s Inn Bar Manager Key Responsibilities Bar Operations Oversee the day-to-day operations of the tavern, ensuring smooth bar service and an excellent guest experience. Bartend multiple times per week, crafting high-quality cocktails and other beverages with confidence and precision. Develop and maintain drink menus for the dining room and tavern that include cocktails; liquor; and beer and wine. Evolve menus periodically, considering seasonality as well as local or regional influences. Include drinks at a range of price points, ensuring t are affordable options across different categories. Create bespoke infusions, mixers, garnishes and other ingredients, with an eye on locally-sourced ingredients. Manage inventory, ordering, and stocking to ensure availability of beverages and supplies. Ensurepliance with health, safety, and liquor licensing regulations. Team Leadership Schedule bartender and barback. Ensure adequate staffing levels. Train, mentor, and motivate staff to maintain high standards of service and professionalism. Foster a positive, collaborative environment, promoting openmunication and teamwork. Guest Engagement
Interact with guests to provide a warm and weing experience, offering suggestions and finding opportunities for improvement through feedback. Create opportunities for unique guest experiences such as tastings and special events. Work with the innkeeper to promote the tavern through marketing and local partnerships. Administrative Duties
Monitor beverage sales, costs, and profitability. Implement strategies to optimize revenue and manage expenses. Maintain accurate records of inventory and sales. Assist with regular reporting and operational checklists. Support Restaurant Operations
Proactively step in as a host, server, or server s assistant during busy periods, as needed. Collaborate across the food and beverage team to ensure seamless coordination between the tavern, dining room, and kitchen. Qualifications Proven experience as a bartender or manager, ideally in a fine dining or hospitality setting. Strong mixology skills with a passion for creating delicious, inventive drinks. Leadership experience, with the ability to train and inspire a small team. Excellent interpersonal andmunication skills, with a focus on guest satisfaction. Organizational skills and attention to detail, with an ability to multitask and adapt to change. Knowledge of Maine liquor laws and regulations, or willingness to learn. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
